Designation:C131297(Reapproved 2012)Standard Practice forMaking and Conditioning Chemical-Resistant SulfurPolymer Cement Concrete Test Specimens in theLaboratory1This standard is issued under the fixed designation C1312;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This practice covers procedures for making and condi-tioning test specimens of chemical-resistant sulfur polymercement concrete(SC)in the laboratory. The specimens are castunder accurate control of materials and test conditions usingaggregate and sulfur polymer cement(SPC)to make SC thatcan be consolidated by rodding,as described in this practice.1.2 Sulfur polymer cement may be furnished as a single ormultiple component system.1.3 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regardedas standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematicalconversions to SI units that are provided for information onlyand are not considered standard.1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2C470/C470M Specification for Molds for Forming ConcreteTest Cylinders VerticallyC904 and Measuring Devices33.Terminology3.1 DefinitionsFor definitions of terms used in thispractice, refer to Terminology C904.4.Significance and Use4.1 This practice is for making specimens of SC in astandard way so that comparative testing can be performed byvarious producers and users.Use of this practice to preparespecimens for laboratory testing will reduce variability thatmight be introduced by different methods of casting and by theuse of a variety of specimen shapes and sizes.5.Apparatus5.1 Molds:5.1.1 Molds for Specimens or Fastenings Thereto in Contactwith the SC shall be made of steel, cast iron,or othernonabsorbent materials that are nonreactive with concretescontaining either SPC,its components,or other polymercements.5.1.2 Size of the Molds shall conform to the dimensions andtolerances specified in the procedure for which the specimensare required.Molds shall hold their dimensions and shapeunder conditions of severe use.5.1.3 Condition of the Molds for Casting shall be watertight.A suitable sealant, such as modeling clay, shall be used wherenecessary to prevent leakage through joints.Positive meansshall be provided to hold base plates firmly to the molds.Ifcylinders are filled vertically and immediately stored horizon-tally for cooling, positive means also shall be provided to holdtop plates firmly to the molds.Reusable molds shall be lightlycoated with mineral oil or a suitable nonreactive releasematerial before use.5.2 Cylinder Molds:5.2.1 Molds for Casting Specimens Vertically shall conformto the requirements of 5.1 and Specification C470/C470M.5.2.2 Molds for Casting Specimens Vertically and StoringHorizontally shall conform to the requirements for symmetryand dimensional tolerances of Specification C470/C470M.Provision shall be made for fixing both end plates firmly to themold.1This practice is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee C03 on Chemical-Resistant Nonmetallic Materialsand is the direct responsibility of SubcommitteeC03.02 on crosssection(unless otherwise specified)and of the dimensionsrequired to produce the desired specimen size. The insidesurfaces of the molds shall be smooth and free from indenta-tions.The sides, bottom, and ends shall be at either equal orright angles to each other and shall be straight, true, and free ofwarpage.Maximum variation from the nominal cross sectionshall not exceed18in.(3.2
