Designation:C116097(Reapproved 2012)Standard Specification forChemical-Resistant Carbon Brick1This standard is issued under the fixed designation C1160;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This specification covers machine made solid uncoredcarbon brick produced from either metallurgical or petroleumcalcined coke, baked to a minimum 1850F(1010C),andsuitable for use in masonry construction which will be exposedto various chemicals. These units are designed primarily forindustries using hydrofluoric acid, fluoride salts, and highconcentrations of alkalies such as sodium and potassiumhydroxide.Carbon brick are normally used with carbon filledchemical-resistant mortars.1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regardedas standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematicalconversions to SI units that are provided for information onlyand are not considered standard.1.3 This standard does not purport to address the safetyconcerns,if any, associated with its use.It is the responsibilityof the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety andhealth practices and determine the applicability of regulatorylimitations prior to use.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2C67 Test Methods for Sampling and Testing Brick andStructural Clay TileC561 Test Method for Ash in a Graphite SampleC904 Terminology Relating to Chemical-Resistant Nonme-tallic MaterialsC1106 Test Methods for Chemical Resistance and PhysicalProperties of Carbon Brick3.Terminology3.1 DefinitionsFor definitions of terms used in thisspecification, see Terminology C904.4.Significance and Use4.1 The chemical-resistant carbon brick meeting this speci-fication is intended for use in acid and alkaline service atvarying temperatures.Physical stress imposed on the brickattributable to thermal shock or pressure differential may ormay not be a consideration. The corrosion resistance andstructural integrity of the brick are dependent on the type andpurity of the carbon and binder used when the brick ismanufactured.4.2 The performance of the brick as tested in Test MethodsC1106 or other tests,or other qualifying data, should bereviewed between the purchaser and the seller.5.Sampling5.1 The brick shall be sampled in accordance with TestMethods C67.6.Chemical Resistance6.1 Carbon brick are inherently non-wetting and highlyresistant to many acids, alkalies, salts, and solvents andcombinations of these chemicals at varying temperatures andconcentrations.6.2 The carbon brick shall be tested in accordance with TestMethods C1106 using a chemical and thermal environment.6.3 To comply with this specification, the carbon brick shallexhibit chemical resistance to those chemical media stated inTable 1 when carried out at ambient temperature in accordancewith Test Methods C1106.7.Physical Properties7.1 The carbon brick shall comply with the values shown inTable 2 for compressive strength, modulus of rupture, andwater absorption when tested according to Test MethodsC1106.7.2 The carbon brick shall have a maximum ash content of8%when tested in accordance with Test Method C561.8.Sizes8.1 The sizes and tolerances of brick shall be as specified bythe purchaser. The measurement of sizes shall be in accordancewith Test Method C67,with the maximum permissible varia-tion in dimensions of individual units not exceeding those inTable 3.1This specification is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee C03 onChemical-Resistant Nonmetallic Materialsand is the direct responsibility of Sub-committee
