Designation:C164314Standard Test Method toMeasuring the Post Dispensing Volumetric Expansion ofAerosol Foam Sealants1This standard is issued under the fixed designation C1643;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This test method measures the volumetric expansion ofaerosol foam sealants after dispensing.1.2 This test method provides a means for estimating thequantity of initial material required to dispense in order to filla cavity.1.3 Aerosol foam sealants are used for a variety of applica-tions intended to reduce airflow through the building envelope.1.4 This test method applies to two types of single compo-nent aerosol foam sealants:polyurethane and latex.1.5 There are no other known standard test methods tomeasure aerosol foam sealants post dispensing expansion.1.6 Values are reported in SI units only.Certain apparatusand supply items are referenced in inch-pound units forpurchasing purposes.1.7 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2C717 Terminology of Building Seals and SealantsC1620 Specification for Aerosol Polyurethane and AerosolLatex Foam Sealants3.Terminology3.1 Definitions:3.1.1 Refer to Terminology C717 for definitions of thefollowing terms used in this test method:aerosol foam sealant, post dispensing contraction, post dispensing expansion, andstandard conditions.4.Summary of Test Method4.1 Procedure AFor single component polyurethane aero-sol foam sealants.4.1.1 Aerosol foam sealant is dispensed into aluminumchannels.4.1.2 Post dispensing volumetric expansion is determinedby the volume of the foam expanded from the channel.4.1.3 Post dispensing volumetric expansion factor is calcu-lated by measuring the volumetric displacement of the curedfoam.4.2 Procedure BFor single component latex aerosol foamsealants.4.2.1 Aerosol foam sealant is dispensed onto aluminumpanels.4.2.2 Post dispensing volumetric expansion is measured bythe change of the foam height.4.2.3 Post dispensing volumetric expansion factor is calcu-lated by measuring the height of the foam.5.Significance and Use5.1 Post dispensing volumetric expansion factor Findicatesthe ratio of the fully cured foam sealant volume and theinitially dispensed foam sealant volume. For example,if theexpansion factor Fwere 2,the fully cured foam would doubleits initial volume;therefore, one should fill 50%of the cavityuniformly to anticipate the full coverage upon curing.5.2 Post dispensing volumetric expansion factor Fdoes notpredict the performance capability of the foam sealants of thesuitability for the intended applications.5.3 This test method is intended to lend guidance in productselection as related to the post dispensing expansion charac-teristics of the aerosol foam sealants.5.4 This test method recognizes that the results are reflectiveof controlled laboratory conditions.Post dispensing expansion1This test method is under the jurisdiction ofASTM Committee C24 on BuildingSeals and Sealants and is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee C24.61 onAerosol Foam SealantsCurrent edition approved June 1,2014.Published July 2014.Originally approvedin 2008.Last previous edition approved in 2008 as C1643-08.DOI:10.1520/C1643-14.2For referenced ASTM standards, visit the ASTM sealants are incontact with.6.Apparatus6.1 Aluminum channels,External dimensions:length=15.25 cm(6 in.),width=1.91 cm(34in.),height=1.91 cm(34in).Internal dimensions:length=15.25 cm(6 in.),width=1.27 cm(0.5 in.),height=1.59 cm(58in.).Wall thickness=0.32 cm(18in).6.2 Aluminum panel,22.86 by 7.62 cm(9 by 3 in.)by 0.06cm(0.025 in.).6.3 Digital caliper, accurate to 0.01 mm.6.4 Top loading balance, readable to 0.01 g.6.5 Wood tongue depressors.6.6 Graduated cylinder1000 mL,with 5 mL increments.7.Test Specimens and Substrates7.1 All sample preparation and test should be done atstandard conditions.7.2 Each channel shall be wiped clean with rubbing alcohol24 h before testing7.3 Polyurethane aerosol foam sealants shall be dispenseddirectly into the aluminum channels.A total of five aluminumchannels are required per test.7.4 Aluminum panels shall be wiped clean with rubb
