Designation:E284315Standard Specification forDemonstrating That a Building is in Walkable Proximity toNeighborhood Assets1This standard is issued under the fixed designation E2843;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This specification provides requirements for demon-strating that a buildings location is in sufficient proximity to arange of establishments, services, and other amenities(referredto as“neighborhood assets”in this specification)such that thelikelihood is increased that the buildings occupants will walkto their destinations when conducting errands or other typicalactivities.1.2 This specification addresses a single indicator regardingthe environmental performance related to a buildings location. It provides one option for evaluating whether a building islocated in such a way as to minimize the impacts associatedwith occupants travel.NOTE1The indicator in and of itself is insufficient to imply any levelof“sustainability”for the building or the neighborhood.Similarly, abuildings failure to meet this specification does not necessarily signify alack of sustainability.Other indicators may be more appropriate for thatbuilding or region;those indicators are outside the scope of this specifi-cation.1.3 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regardedas standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematicalconversions to SI units that are provided for information onlyand are not considered standard.1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2E631 Terminology of Building ConstructionsE2114 Terminology for Sustainability Relative to the Perfor-mance of Buildings2.2 Federal occupants havean opportunity to use walking as a means of transportation toconduct errands and typical activities.4.2 Shorter travel distances to neighborhood assets providebuilding occupants with increased opportunity to walk tocommon destinations, and the corollary opportunity to reducevehicle miles traveled and the associated pollution, trafficcongestion, and household transportation costs.4.3 The users of this specification include developers, planners, building owners, engineers, architects, landscapearchitects and other design professionals, contractors, realtors, governmental
