Designation:C106609(Reapproved 2015)Standard Specification forNuclear Grade Zirconium Oxide Pellets1This standard is issued under the fixed designation C1066;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This specification applies to pellets of stabilized zirco-nium oxide used in nuclear reactors.1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as thestandard. The values given in parentheses are for informationonly.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2C559 Test Method for Bulk Density by Physical Measure-ments of Manufactured Licensing of Production and Utiliza-tion Facilities3.Terminology3.1 Terms shall be defined in accordance with TerminologyC859,except for the following:3.2 buyerthe organization issuing the purchase order.3.3 pelleta fabricated geometric shape of zirconiumoxidehaving a chemical composition as described in Section 4.3.4 pellet lotthe pellets produced from one zirconiumoxide powder lot using one set of process parameters.Pellet lotsize shall be agreed upon between the seller and the buyer.3.5 phase transformationthe rearrangement of the atomicordering of a crystalline lattice as a material is cycled througha critical transformation or inversion temperature. The changefrom one crystalline phase to another may be accompanied bya volume change that could lead to cracks or defects in articlesfabricated from such materials.3.6 powder lota specified quantity of zirconium-oxidepowder with stabilizing additive, blended together such thatsamples taken in accordance with Section 7 can be consideredas representative of the entire quantity.3.7 sellerthe zirconium oxide pellet supplier.3.8 stabilizing additiveA material which, when present insufficient concentration in the subject material exhibiting thephase transformation, produces a stabilized crystalline phasethat does not undergo a transformation or inversion at anytemperature within the expected fabrication or usage regime ofthe manufactured pellet. The potentially deleterious volumechange is therefore avoided.4.Chemical Composition4.1 The starting zirconium oxide powder shall be in accor-dance with Specification C1065.4.2 A stabilizing additive shall be used with the zirconiumoxide. The recommended stabilizing additive is either calciumoxide(CaO)or yttrium oxide(Y2O3).The recommendedadditive concentration in the case of CaO stabilization is 4 to8 weight%.In the case of Y2O3stabilization,the recom-mended additive concentration is 14 to 20 weight%.4.3 Use analytical chemistry methods as agreed upon be-tween the buyer and seller.4.4 The impurity concentration excluding the stabilizingadditives, shall not exceed 0.5 weight%.Individual elementlimits are specified in Table 1.The buyer may specifyadditional limits for any other elements not listed in Table 1.4.5 The moisture concentration is included in the totalhydrogen limit(see Table 1).5.Physical Requirements5.1 Physical Dimensions:1This
