Designation:D233020Standard Test Method forMethylene Blue Active Substances1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D2330;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This test method covers the determination of com-pounds that react with methylene blue under the conditionsspecified in the test procedure. They are referred to asmethylene blue active substances(MBAS),and are calculatedand reported in terms of the reference material, linear alkylbenzene sulfonate,LAS.1.2 This test method is applicable for determining MBAS inwater and wastewater. It is the users responsibility to ensurethe validity of this test method for waters of untested matrices.1.3 This test method is a simple, rapid, control proceduresuitable for monitoring the effectiveness of a biodegradation orother linear alkyl benzene sulfonate(LAS)removal process. For greater specificity and interference removal, the pretreat-ment procedure in Annex A1 should be used.Data derivedwithout the pretreatment procedure should be interpreted withcare. This test method is applicable in the range from 0.03 to1.5 mg/L for a 100-mL sample.1.4 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded asstandard. No other units of measurement are included in thisstandard.1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety, health, and environmental practices and deter-mine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.For a specific hazard statement, see 8.3.1.6 This international standard was developed in accor-dance with internationally recognized principles on standard-ization established in the Decision on
