Designation:C503/C503M15Standard Specification forMarble Dimension Stone1This standard is issued under the fixed designation C503/C503M;the number immediately following the designation indicates the yearof original adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.A superscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This specification covers the material characteristics, physical requirements, and sampling appropriate to the selec-tion of marble for general building and structural purposes.Refer to Guides C1242 and C1528 for the appropriate selectionand use of marble dimension stone.1.2 Dimension marble shall include stone that is sawed, cut, split,or otherwise finished or shaped into blocks, slabs or tiles, and shall specifically exclude molded, cast and artificiallyaggregated units composed of fragments, and also crushed andbroken stone.1.3 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound unitsare to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated ineach system may not be exact equivalents;therefore, eachsystem shall be used independently of the other.Combiningvalues from the two systems may result in non-conformancewith the standard.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2C97/C97M Test Methods for Absorption and Bulk SpecificGravity of DefinitionsAll definitions are in accordance with Ter-minology C119.4.Classification4.1 Dimension marble is classified as follows:4.1.1 I Calcite.4.1.2 II Dolomite.NOTE1See Terminology C119 for definitions of calcite and dolomite.5.Soundness5.1 Marbles are further classified into four“Soundness”groups:A,B,C,and D.Classifications are based on theproperties encountered in fabrication and has no referencewhatsoever to comparative merit or value.Marble is classifiedby its producer.5.2 The Soundness classifications indicate what repairs maybe necessary prior to or during installation, based on standardtrade practices.5.3 The groupings A,B,C,and D,should be taken intoaccount when specifying marble, for all marbles are notsuitable for all building applications. This is particularly true ofthe comparatively fragile marbles classified under SoundnessGroups C and D,which may need additional fabrication beforeor during installation.Only Soundness Group A marble shouldbe used for exterior installations,or any applications thatrequire the stone panel to resist lateral loads or to bear weightwithout reinforcement.5.3.1 The four groups are:1This specification is under the jurisdiction of Marble similar in soundness to Group A,butwith less favorable working qualities;may have some minorsmall holes or voids that may require a limited amount of oneor more of the following:waxing3,sticking4,and filling5.Group CMarble with some variations in working quali-ties;geological flaws, voids, and lines of separation arecommon. It is standard practice to repair these variations byone or more of the following methods:waxing3,sticking4,filling5,cementing,or other forms of additional reinforcement.Group D Marbles similar in soundness to Group C,butcontaining a larger proportion of natural faults, maximumvariations in working qualities, and requiring more of the samemethods of finishing.66.Physical Properties6.1 Marble supplied under this specification shall conformto the physical requirements prescribed in Table 1.6.2 Marble for exterior dimension use shall be SoundnessGroupAstone, free of spalls, cracks, open seams, pits,or otherdefects that are likely to impair its structural integrity in itsintended use.6.3 Marble for interior use may
