Designation:C31507(Reapproved 2016)Standard Specification forClay Flue Liners and Chimney Pots1This standard is issued under the fixed designation C315;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval. This standard has been approved for use by agencies of the U.S.Department of Defense.1.Scope1.1 This specification establishes the criteria for acceptance, prior to installation,of clay flue liners and chimney pots usedfor conveying hot gases in masonry chimneys.1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regardedas standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematicalconversions to SI units that are provided for information onlyand are not considered standard.1.3 For installation of clay flue liners, see Practice C1283.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2C67 Test Methods for Sampling and Testing Brick andStructural Clay TileC301 Test Methods for Vitrified Clay PipeC896 Terminology Relating to Clay ProductsC1283 Practice for Installing Clay Flue Lining3.Terminology3.1 Definitions:3.1.1 Clay, fire clay, shale, and surface clay are as defined inTerminology C896.3.1.2 chimney pota pipe used at the top of the chimney toincrease draft and carry off smoke.4.Classification4.1 TypesFlue liners acceptable under this specificationshall be designated as rectangular nonmodular, rectangularmodular, round or oval.5.Materials and Manufacture5.1 Flue liners and chimney pots shall be manufacturedfrom fire clay, shale, surface clay,or a combination of thesematerials that when formed and fired to suitable temperatures, shall yield a product that is strong, durable, serviceable, andconforms to this specification.6.Physical and Chemical Requirements6.1 Absorption:6.1.1 The absorption of clay flue liners and chimney potsshall not exceed 8.0%when tested in accordance with TestMethods C301.6.1.2 Test SpecimensFive dry test specimens shall beobtained from the five flue liners or chimney pots to be testedand shall measure as closely as possible to 4 by 4 in.(100 by100 mm)per side. All rough edges shall be ground off andloose particles removed.6.1.3 If any of the test specimens fail to meet therequirements, the manufacturer shall be allowed to retest ontwo additional specimens for each one that failed. The flues andpots will be acceptable if all the subsequent specimens forretest meet the requirements.6.2 Acid Resistance:6.2.1 This is a test used to determine the resistance of clayflue liners and chimney pots to the action of acids encounteredin chimneys. This test shall be performed only when specified.6.2.2 The flue liner and chimney pots shall be acceptable ifthe acid soluble material does not exceed 0.25%when testedin accordance with Test Methods C301.6.2.3 Test SpecimensSelect one test specimen from eachsize of flue liner or chimney pot.The specimens shall measureabout 2 by 2 in.(51 by 51 mm)per side and weigh not morethan 200 g.They shall be sound pieces with all edges freshlybroken, free of cracks or shattered edges, and shall bethoroughly cleaned.6.3 Freeze-Thaw Cycle Test:6.3.1 When flue liners or chimney pots are tested in accor-dance with Test Methods C67,Section 9 on structural clay tile, there shall be no breakage and the percentage of weight lossshall not exceed 0.5%.6.3.2 Test SpecimensFive dry test specimens shall beobtained from the five flue liners or chimney pots to be testedand shall measure as closely as possible to 4 by 4 in.(100 by100 mm)per side. All rough edges shall be ground off andloose particles removed.1This specification is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee C04 onVitrified Clay Pipe and is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee C04.20 onMethods of Test and Specifications.Current edition approved Nov.1,2016.Published November 2016.Originallyapproved in 1953.Last previous edition approved in 2011 as C315 07(2011).DOI:10.1520/C0315-07R16.2For referenced ASTM standards, visit the ASTM website,www.astm.org,orcontact ASTM Customer Service at serviceastm.org.For Annual Book of ASTMStandards volume information, refer to the standards Document Summary page onthe ASTM website.Copyright ASTM International,100 Barr Harbor Drive,PO Box C700,West Conshohocken,PA 19428-2959.United States1 7.Sizes and Dimensions7.1 Flue liners shall be specified and furnished in thedimensions prescribed in Tables 1-4.When other sizes arerequired, flue liners that meet the requirements of Sections 5and 6 shall be cut and installed in the chimney.7.2 Variations in dimensions in Tables 1-4 shall not exceed612in.(613 mm)for outside dimensions.Permissible wallthickness variation is 618in.(63 mm)for all flue liners, except that there shall be no limit for plus variation in roundflue liners.Variations in dimensions of round flue lining shallnot exceed those shown in Table 3.The maximum difference inthe
