Designation:D 1131 97Standard Test Methods of TestingRosin Oils1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D 1131;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon(e)indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 These test methods are intended for use in determiningwhether a rosin oil conforms with the specifications andrequirements usually applied to ensure its suitability for aparticular use.In general, not all of the tests will be required todetermine the fitness of an oil for a specific use.The term“rosin oil”includes the oils obtained by dry destructivedistillation of rosin, with or without subsequent redistillation, and also certain compounded oils prepared from a rosin oilbase. It has no relationship to the product formerly known asliquid rosin, for which the term“tall oil”has been adopted.1.2 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:D 88 Test Method for years.Although lesswidely used at the present time,it is still a significant item ofcommerce and standard methods are required to ensure thatproducts meet established specifications.4.Appearance4.1 Examine a sample of the oil in a clear glass tube bytransmitted light,to ascertain whether any separated water, crystals,or insoluble foreign matter are present.5.Specific Gravity5.1 Determine the specific gravity of the oil at 15.5C(60F)by means of any suitable apparatus that has beencalibrated at 15.5C(60F).Report the specific gravity to thethird decimal as:Specific gravity,15.5/15.5C60/60F!(1)Such observed specific gravity may be converted to the25/25C(77/77F)basis by multiplying the observed readingby the factor 1.002.NOTE1If a pycnometer is used, the weight of water contained by thepycnometer at 25C shall be determined,in which case the ratio of oil towater will be the specific gravity at 25/25C.To convert this to the25/15.5C(77/60F)basis,multiply by the factor 0.998.6.Viscosity6.1 Determine the viscosity of the oil at 25C using TestMethod D 1545.6.2 Determine the viscosity of the oil at 100F(37.8C),130F(54.4C),or 210F(98.9C),using a Saybolt UniversalViscometer in accordance with Test Method D 88.Report theviscosity in Saybolt Universal seconds.6.3 Determine the viscosity of the oil in centipoise at 25Cusing Test Method D 2196.7.Flash Point7.1 Determine the flash point of the oil either in accordancewith Test Methods D 3278 or in accordance with Test MethodD 93.Report the method used.1These methods are under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D-1 on Paintand Related Coatings,Materials, and Applications and are the direct responsibilityof Subcommittee D01.34 on Naval Stores.Current edition approved Nov.10,1997.Published June 300-mL Erlenmeyer flask.Add 100 mL of a solventcontaining equal parts of acetone and either 95%ethyl alcohol(Formula No.3Aor No.30 denatured)or methyl alcohol.Placeon a steam bath and dissolve the oil in the solvent, connectingin air-tube condenser to the neck of the flask and heating fornot more than 15 min,if necessary.Cool, and potentiometri-cally titrate with either aqueous or alcoholic 0.2 N standardalkali solution.Calculate the acid number,in milligrams ofKOH per gram of sample,as follows:Acid number 5V 3 N3 56.1!/W(2)where:N=normality of the standard alkali solution,V=millilitres of alkali solution, andW=weight of sample.9.Moisture9.1 Determine the moisture in rosin oil on a 200-mL samplein accordance w
