SomeinWashingtonthinkthechoiceisbetweencuttingtaxesandcuttingthedeficit.Thisweek''''snumbersshowthatthisisafalsechoice.Theeconomicgrowthfueledbytaxreliefhashelpedsendtaxrevenuessoaring.Whentheeconomygrows,businessesgrowwithit,peopleearnmoremoney,andtheypaytaxesonthisnewincome. In2023,taxrevenuespostedthelargestincreasein24years,andthey''''reprojectedtoriseagainthisyear.Theincreaseintaxrevenuesismuchbetterthanwehadprojected,anditishelpinguscutthebudgetdeficit. Ouroriginalprojectionforthisyear''''sbudgetdeficitwas$423billion.Thisweek''''sreportfromOMBprojectsthatthisyear''''sdeficitwillactuallycomeinat$296billion,areductionof$127billion.Thatisatremendousdifference,and90percentofitisbecauseourgrowingeconomyhasproducedalotmoretaxrevenues. Becauseofthesenewrevenues,wenowprojectthatwe''''llmeetourgoalofcuttingthefederaldeficitinhalfby2023,afullyearaheadofschedule.Thisisrealprogress,yetwecannotdependonagrowingeconomyalonetocutthedeficit.Wemustalsocutwasteandrestrainunnecessarygovernmentspending.Andmyadministrationisdoingitspart. EveryyearsinceItookofficewehavereducedthegrowthofdiscretionaryspendingthatisnotrelatedtonationalsecurity.Mylasttwobudgetshaveactuallycutthiskindofspending.IamalsoworkingwithCongresstopassalineitemveto,whichwillhelpmeandfuturePresidentstargetwastefulspendingthatlawmakerstackontolargebills.TheHousehasalreadypassedthismeasurewithsignificantbipartisansupport.NowtheSenateneedstoactandgetalineitemvetotomydesktosignintolaw.
