ASTM DLbb4 80 0757530 0022bb7 I/-26-Y-Designation:D 1664-80(Reapproved 1985)4Ib Standard Test Method for MIXTURES COATING AND STRIPPING OF BITUMEN-AGGREGATE This standard i s issued under the fixed designation D 1664,the number immediately following the designation indicates the year of original adoption or,i n the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number i n parentheses indicates the year of last.reapproval.A superscript epsilon(E)indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.Thismefhod hasbeen approvedfor use by agenciesof the Departmentof Defenseandfor listingin the DoD Indexof Specifications and Standards.1.scope 1.1 This method describes coating and static immersion procedures for determining the re-tention of a bituminous f i l m on an aggregate surface in the presence of water. It is applicable to cutback, emulsified, and semisolid asphalts and to tars.1.2 This standard may involve hazardous ma-terials,operations,and equipment. This standard does not purport to address all o f the safety prob-lems associated with its use.It is the responsibil-ity o f whoever uses this standard to consult and establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability o f regulatory limi-tations prior to use.2.Applicable Document 2.1 ASTM Standard E 11 Specification for Wire-Cloth Sieves for Testing Purposes 3.Summary of Method 3.1 The selected and prepared aggregate is coated with the bitumen at a specitied temper-ature appropriate to the grade of bitumen used.In the case of cutback asphalt and tar,the bitumen-coated aggregate is subjected to a cur-ing period at 140F(6OOC).In the case of emulsified asphalt, the aggregate is coated with bitumen and subjected to a curing period at 275OF(135OC).After coating,in the case of semisolid asphalt and tar(Grades RT-10,RT-11,and RT-12),or after curing in the case of cutback asphalt, emulsified asphalt, and tar(Grades RT-1 through RT-9,RTCB-5 and RTCB-6),the coated aggregate is immersed in distilled water for 16 to 18 h.At the end of the soaking period, and w i t h the bitumen-aggre-gate mixture under water, the total area of the aggregate on which the bituminous fUm is re-tained is estimated visually as above or below 95%.NOTE 1-The 95%level was selected because it has been determined by cooperative test, that only at this and at the 5 5%retained coating levels, can a reasonable degree of the reproducibility be obtained when rating the same sample by visual estimation.4.Signitkame and Use 4.1 This method should not be used as a measure of field performance because such cor-relation has not been established.4.2 This procedure is suggested as a go-no-go test at the 95%level because its precision is not satisfactory for application at lower levels. No attempt shall be made to evaluate the re-tention of a f i l m below 95%.This is a limitation of the method and does not intend to imply in any way that an aggregate-bitumen combina-tion failing to retain a 95%coating by this laboratory procedure will give unsatisfactory performance in the field.Nom 2-A stripping test employing a tracer salt method and a flame photometer technique, which provides for film evaluation below the 95%level,has been published for information only i n the 1963 Annual Reporf of Committee D-4:A statistical re-port on the work done to substantiate the method i s available from ASTM Headquarters? This method is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D-4 ou Road and Paving Materials and is the direct responsi-biiity of Subcommittee W4.22 on Effect of Water and Other Elements on Bituminous Coated Aggregates.Current edition approved Oct.31,1980.PublishedDember 1980.Orighally published as D 1664-59 T.Last previous edition D 1664-69(1975).*Annual Book ofASTMStandardr.Vol 14.02.Proceedings,Am.Soc.Testing Mats.,Vol 64,1964.Available on loan from ASTM Headquarten,1916 Race St,Philadelphia,Pa.19103.Requesf Research Report No.RR:Do4-127.292 a NOTICE:This standard has either been superseded and replaced by a new version or discontinued.Contact ASTM International(www.astm.org)for the latest information.ASTM DLbb4 80 E 0759530 0022668 3 5.Apparatus 5.1 Containers, for mixing, having rounded comers, such as seamless tin cans,16-OZ(500-mL)capacity.5.2 Scales, with a capacity of 200 g,accurate to f 0.1 g.5.3 Spatula, steel, with a stiff blade approx-imately 1 in.(25 mm)in width and 4 in.(LOO mm)in length.5.4 Constant-Temperature Oven, capable of maintaining any temperature between 140 and 300F(60 and 149C)within f 2F(1.1C).5.5 Sieves,standard,woven-wire,square-hole,of%-in.(6.3-mm)and%-in.(9.5-mm)size,in accordance with Specification E 11.6.Materials 6.1 Aggregates-Prepare the aggregates such that 100%passes a%-in.(9.5-mm)sieve and is retained on a%-in.(6.3-mm)sieve.Wash the aggregates in distilled water to remove all f i n e s.Dry at 275 to 300F(135 to 149C)to constant weight.Store in airtight containers until re-quired for use.6.2 Distilled Water-Reboil or redistill if necessary so that the
