,.-.Designation:D 2314-80(Reapproved 1984)4clti,Standard Methods of Testing HOMOGENEOUS BITUMINIZED FIBER PIPE This standard is issued under the fwed designation D 2314;the number immediately foliowing the designation indicates theyear of original adoption or,i n the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.A superscript epsilon(e)indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope 1.1 These methods cover the procedures for testing homogeneous bituminized fiber pipe.H o-mogeneous bituminized fiber pipe is defined as a pipe composed of an interwoven fibrous struc-ture thoroughly impregnated with a bituminous compound. The wall of the pipe shall be dense and homogeneous,Without seams or lamina-tions.1.2 The test methods appear in the following order:Chemical Resistance Water Absorption Kerosine Resisfance Heat Resistance Boiling Water Resisfance Resistance to Flattening Dry Crushing Strength Crushing Strength of Coupfin Wet C r u s h i n g Strength Beam Strength Joint Tightness Sections 4 to 6 12 to 15 16 to 18 19 to 21 22 to 26 27 to 31 33 to 37 38 to 43 44 to 46 7tQ 11 gs 32 1.3 This standard may involve hazardous ma-terials,operations,and equipment. This standard does not pitrport to address all o f the safety prob-lems associated with its use.It is the responsibil-ity o f whoever uses this standard to consult and establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability o f regulatory limi-tations prior to use.2.Significance 2.1 A l of the following tests are quality con-trol tests. They measure the significant character-istics that use and experience have proved to be indimfive of quality in homogeneous bitumin-ized fiber pipe.None of the individual tests are intended to measure performance directly.How-ever,when the results of a l of these fats are considered as a whole,a relationship to perform-ance does exist.3.Conditioning 3.1 Except as otherwise noted, condition all specimens 24 h in air at 21 to 24C(70 to 75F)and test i n a room where the temperature is simiarly controlie.CHEMICAL RESISTANCE 4.Significance 4.1 This test indicates the corrosion resistance of the material and the resistance of the impreg-nant to acids, alkalies, and salts.5.Procedure 5.1 Immerse 150-mm(641.)lengths of pipe for 30 days in 0.5 mass%solutions of sodium carbonate(Na2C03),sodium sulfate(NaZSOd,and sulfuric acid(H4S04)and then remove.6.Report tion or deterioration of the impregnant.6.1 Report any visual signs of chemical reac-WATER ABSORPTION 7.Significance 7.1 This test is to determine complete impreg-nation and absence of voids in the fiber structure.8.Test Specimens 8.1 Saw sections,150 or 305 mm(6 or 12 in.)These methods are under the jurisdiction of ASTM Com-mittee D 8 on Roofing,Waterproofmg, and Bituminous Mate riais and is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee W8.16 on Bituminized Fiber Pipe.Current editionapprovedct.31,1980.FublishedDec.1980.QriginaUy published as D2314-64 T.Last previous edition D 2314-16.NOTICE:This standard has either been superseded and replaced by a new version or discontinued.Contact ASTM International(www.astm.org)for the latest information.in length, from pipe, wipe clean and dry,and weigh to the nearest O.1 g.9.Procedure 9.1 After 48-h immersion in water at 21 to 24C(70 to 75F),remove the sections, drain and wipe dry,and reweigh to the nearest O.1 g.NOTE ISpecimens, after this test, may be used within Y 2 h for the wet crushing strength test(Section 3 5).10.Calculation and Report 10.1 Calculate the gain in mass to the nearest 0.1%as a percentage of original mass.Report the results separately for each specimen.11.Precision 1 1.1 Use the following criteria for judging the acceptability of results(95%probability)on samples from the same lot, from the same man-ufacturer,and of uniform wall thickness,f5%.I I.1.1 Repeatability-Duplicate results by the same operator are not to be considered sus-pect unless the gain in mass differs by more than 0.23%.1 1.1.2 Reproditcibility-The results submit-ted by each of two laboratories are not to be considered suspect unless the gain in mass differs by more than 0.5 1%.KEROSINE RESISTANCE 12.Significance 12.1 This test measures the resistance of the product to petroleum derivatives, and indirectly measures the quality of the impregnant.13.Test Specimens 13.1 Saw 300-mm(12-in.)sections(150-mm(6-in.)sections optional)of sound, undamaged Pipe.14.Procedure 14.1 Immerse the specimens in at least 3.8 litres(1 gal)of clean kerosine at 21 to 24C(70 to 75F)for 10 days, remove and wipe off.Test the specimens within Y 2 h for crushing strength(Section 29)and report.15.Report per metre(or pounds-force per linear foot).15.1 Report the maximum load in newtons D 2314 HEAT RESISTANCE 16.Significance 16.1 This test indicates the presence(or ab-sence)of foreign materials that may decompose at moderate temperatures. It may also indicate low molecular weight or volatile constitue
