Designation:D1864/D1864M89(Reapproved 2009)1Standard Test Method forMoisture in Mineral Aggregate Used on Built-Up Roofs1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D1864/D1864M;the number immediately following the designation indicates theyear of original adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of lastreapproval.A superscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval. This standard has been approved for use by agencies of the Department of Defense.1.Scope1.1This test method covers the determination of moisturein mineral aggregate for use on built-up roofs.1.2 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound unitsare to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated ineach system may not be exact equivalents;therefore, eachsystem shall be used independently of the other.Combiningvalues from the two systems may result in non-conformancewith the standard.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2D75 Practice for Sampling AggregatesD1863 Specification for Mineral Aggregate Used onBuilt-Up Roofs3.Summary of Test Method3.1 The aggregate is dried to constant mass in a 110C230F oven. The mass percent moisture is calculated as theloss in mass based on the mass of the oven dry aggregate.4.Significance and Use4.1 This test method measures the moisture in mineralaggregate required by Specification D1863.5.Apparatus5.1 Balance,1000-g 2.2-lb capacity, sensitive to 0.01%ofthe capacity.5.2 Oven, large enough to hold the sample and capable ofmaintaining a temperature of 110C 230F 6 1%.5.3 Sample Container, consisting of an evaporating dish orsimilar shallow container.6.Sampling6.1 Sample aggregates received in bulk in accordance withPractice D75.6.2 For aggregates received in bags or small containers, select a number of bags or small containers at random, equivalent to the cube root of the total number in the shipment.7.Procedure7.1 Transfer to a tared dish 500 g 1 lb 6 1%of theaggregate, weighed to the nearest 2 0.1 g 104-lb.Place inan oven at 110C 230F for 4 h.Cool in a desiccator.Weighto the nearest 2 0.1 g 104-lb.Repeat the drying for 1-hperiods until constant mass is obtained.8.Calculation8.1 Calculate the percentage of moisture as follows:Moisture,%5B 2 C!/C 2 A!#3100(1)where:A=mass of container,B=original mass of sample and container, andC=mass of sample and container after drying.9.Precision and Bias9.1 The following data should be used for judging theacceptability of results(95%probability)on samples from thesame lot from the same supplier:9.1.1 RepeatabilityDuplicate results by the same operatorshould not be considered suspect unless they differ by morethan the following amount:Moisture Content,%Repeatability, percentage points0 to 50.51This test method is under the jurisdiction ofASTM Committee D08 on Roofingand Waterproofing and is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee D08.03 onSurfacing and Bituminous Materials for Membrane Waterproofing and Built-upRoofing.Current edition approved Dec.1,2009.Published December 2009.Originallyapproved in 1976.Last previous edition approved in 2002 as D1864 89(2002).DOI:10.1520/D1864_D1864M-89R09E01.2For referenced ASTM standards, visit the ASTM suspect unless they differby more than the following amount:Moisture Content,%Reproducibility, percentage points0 to 51.09.2 BiasThere is no bias known in this test method.10.Keywords10.1 built-up
