Designation:D205114Standard Test Method forDurability of Finish of Zippers to Laundering1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D2051;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This test method covers the determination of the dura-bility of the enamel or other decorative coating of a zipperwhen subjected to laundering.1.2 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2D123 Terminology Relating to TextilesD2050 Terminology Relating terminology used in this standard, refer to TerminologyD123.4.Summary of Test Method4.1 Specimens are laundered in laboratory equipment at alow liquor-to-goods ratio under conditions of temperature, bleaching, and abrasive action that produce the effect ofrepeated launderings in a conveniently short time. The zippercoating is abraded by the throw, slide, and impact of anappropriate number of steel balls. The effects of the test onzipper coating are evaluated by noting the loss of coating onthe zipper chain or components,or both.5.Significance and Use5.1 Test Method D2051 is useful for testing to determine theeffect of repeated laundering on the appearance of the decora-tive coating of a zipper.5.2 This test method is considered satisfactory for accep-tance testing of commercial shipments because the method hasbeen used extensively in the trade for acceptance testing.5.2.1If there are differences of practical significancebetween reported test results for two laboratories(or more),comparative test should be performed to determine if there is astatistical bias between them, using competent statistical assis-tance.As a minimum, the test samples should be used that areas homogeneous as possible, that are drawn from the materialfrom which the disparate test results were obtained, and thatare randomly assigned in equal numbers to each laboratory fortesting.Other materials with established test values may beused for this purpose. The test results from the two laboratoriesshould be compared using a statistical test for unpaired data, ata probability level chosen prior to the testing series. If a bias isfound, either its cause must be found and corrected,or futuretest results must be adjusted in consideration of the knownbias.5.3 The test method(s)in the standard along with those inTest Methods D2052,D2053,D2054,D2057,D2058,D2059,D2060,D2061,and D2062 are a collection of proven testmethods. They can be used as aids in the evaluation of zipperswithout the need for a thorough knowledge of zippers.The1This test method is under the jurisdiction ofASTM Committee D13 on Textilesand is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee D13.54 on Subassemblies.Themethod was
