Designation:D 1701 95Standard Test Methods forScavenger Content of Askarels1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D 1701;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon(e)indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 These test methods cover the determination of theamount of an additive, either tin tetraphenyl or phenoxypro-pene oxide,(1,2-epoxy-3-phenoxypropane)or dicyclodiepoxycarboxylate(3,4-epoxycyclohexylmethyl-3,4-epoxycyclohexane-carboxylate),present in askarels as a scav-enger for arc-formed gases.Separate procedures are describedfor each scavenger.1.2 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:D 1193 Specification for Reagent Water23.Significance and Use3.1 Measurement of scavenger content indicates the amountof protection available against arc-formed gases and permitsestimation of the amount of makeup additive required.3.2 Many askarels contain polychlorinated biphenyls(PCBs).Manufacture and sale of PCBs has been prohibited byFederal regulation in the United States since 1978.Theconditions for continued use and the handling and disposal ofPCBs are also regulated.Users of this and other methods ofmeasuring the properties of askarels containing PCBs areresponsible for following applicable Federal, state, and localregulations.4.Identification of Additive4.1 Tin tetraphenyl can be readily identified because itseparates from askarel fluid on cooling;if a test specimen iscooled to 20C the tin tetraphenyl will appear on the surfaceas a crystalline layer.4.2 No rapid identification test for phenoxypropene oxide ordicyclodiepoxy carboxylate is as yet available;if a testspecimen of askarel gives a negative result for tin tetraphenylupon cooling,it may be assumed to contain one of the epoxidesand may be tested accordingly.5.Purity of Reagents5.1 Purity of ReagentsUse reagent grade chemicals in alltests.Unless otherwise indicated,it is intended that all reagentsshall conform to the specifications of the Committee onAnalytical Reagents of the American Chemical Society, wheresuch specifications are available.3Other grades may be used, provided it is first ascertained that the reagent is of sufficientlyhigh purity to permit its use without lessening the accuracy ofthe determination.5.2 Purity of WaterUse reagent grade water conformingto Specification D 1193,unless otherwise specified.TIN TETRAPHENYL6.Summary of Test Method6.1 Reacted scavenger is measured by hydrolyzing thereaction product;the hydrochloric acid formed enters into thewater phase and is titrated with standard potassium hydroxidesolution.Total scavenger is measured by reacting the testspecimen with dry hydrochloric acid gas, then measuring thereacted scavenger content.Unreacted scavenger content isequal to the total scavenger content minus the reacted scaven-ger content.7.Apparatus7.1 Separatory Funnel,Squibb,pearshaped,125-mL capac-ity,with standard-taper joint.7.2 Standard-Taper Joint, male, fitted with a side-arm tubeabove the joint for exit of gas,and a bubbling tube that reacheswithin 1 cm of the bottom of the funnel and is provided witha capillary tip.7.3 Drying Tower, for air supply.8.Reagents and Materials8.1 Hydrogen Chloride Gas,DryDry hydrogen chloridegas(HCl)from either a cylinder or generator.Dry the gasthrough a sulfuric acid drying tower.1These test methods are under jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D-27 onElectrical Insulating Liquids and Gasesand are the direct responsibility of Subcom-mittee D27.06on
