Designation:D198513Standard Practice forPreparing Concrete Blocks for Testing Sealants, for Jointsand Cracks1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D1985;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This practice covers the preparation of concrete blocksused for testing of joint and crack sealants for portland cementconcrete and asphaltic concrete pavements. There are numer-ous standard material specifications that use concrete blocksprepared according to this practice.Refer to the specificstandard material specification of interest to determine whichtests apply and refer to the test methods for each specific test.1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as thestandard. The values given in parentheses are provided forinformation purposes only.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2C33 Specification for concreteblocks for the testing of sealants. It is not intended to establishtest procedures or conditions of test which are associated witheach of the joint sealants.4.Standard Conditions4.1 The Preparation35.1 MaterialsThe aggregate shall conform to Specifica-tion C33,except as specified herein. The aggregate gradingshall be as shown in Table 1.The coarse aggregate shall consistof crushed limestone(plus 95%CaCO3)having a waterabsorption of not more than 1.5%.The fine aggregate shallconsist of crushed limestone and shall be manufactured fromthe same parent rock as the coarse aggregate.4The portlandcement shall conform to ASTM Specification C150,Type II.The concrete shall have a water-cement ratio of 0.49,a cementfactor of 335 6 30 kg/m3(6.0 6 0.5 bags of cement per cubicyard),and a slump of 63 6 13 mm(212612in.).The ratio offine aggregate to total aggregate shall be approximately 40%by solid volume. The air content shall be 5.0 6 0.5%and shallbe obtained by the addition to the batch of an air-entrainingagent.Prepare the concrete in accordance with the proceduredescribed in Test Method C192/C192M.5.1.1 Alternate Block MaterialsAs an alternate to thematerials specified in 5.1,the blocks may be prepared using aconcrete mixture which meets local requirements for concretepavements.Use the materials specified in 5.1 for all refereetesting.5.2 Block PreparationUse a minimum 100 mm by 300mm by 75 mm(4 in.wide by 12 in.long by 3 in.deep)mold,1This practice is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D04 on Road andPaving Materials and is the direct
