Designation:D179317Standard Test Method forWater Spotting of Emulsion Floor Polishes1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D1793;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This test method covers the determination of waterspotting resistance of water emulsion floor polishes. The testmethod approximates the actual conditions of water spottingencountered in service.1.2 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.1.3 This international standard was developed in accor-dance with internationally recognized principles on standard-ization established in the Decision on Principles for theDevelopment of International Standards,Guides and Recom-mendations issued by the World Trade Organization TechnicalBarriers to Trade(TBT)Committee.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2D1436 Test Methods for Application of Emulsion FloorPolishes to Substrates for Testing Purposes3.Terminology3.1 Definitions:3.1.1 water spottingany change in appearance of surfaceresulting solely from the action of cool water.4.Significance and Use4.1 This test method measures the ability of a floor polish toresist spotting by water. This test method may be used tomeasure the extent of damage by a large amount of water or ina separate method to measure the amount of damage by a smallamount of water that has evaporated to dryness.Referencepolishes should be used for comparison.NOTE1The test method may induce slight whitening, color change, noticeable change in appearance, including removal of the film, which iscaused by contact with water.5.Apparatus5.1 SubstrateThe substrate to be used is vinyl composi-tion tile(OVCT).35.2 Distilled Water.5.3 Pipet,volumetric,1-mL.6.Preparation of Test Panel6.1 Apply the emulsion floor polish on the black officialvinyl composition tile panel in accordance with Method C(Manual Dip Method)of Test Methods D1436.Afterapplication,place the panel in a near vertical position and at theend of 10 min, wipe off the bead at the bottom of the panel andallow the panel to dry in a vertical position for 2 h at standardconditions of 50 6 4%relative humidity and 23.9 6 1.1C(756 2F).Apply a second coat in the same manner but reversethe panel so that the top is at the bottom.Drain in a nearvertical position for 10 min, wipe off the bead, and continuedrying in a vertical position at standard conditions for 24 h.NOTE2The drying time, counted from the time of application of thesecond coat, may be varied from 24 h,but it should be remembered thatsome floor polishes which have suitable water spotting resistance duringtheir normal service life do not achieve this resistance until 24 to 48 h afterapplication.7.Procedure7.1 Dynamic TestStandard conditions of 50 6 4%rela-tive humidity and 23.9 6 1.1C(75 6 2F)should prevail inthe test area.Place the panel in a horizontal position makingsure that the top is level.Place 1 mL of distilled water near thecenter of the panel, and allow it to stand undisturbed for 1 h.1This test method is under the jurisdiction ofASTM Committee D21 on Polishesand is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee D21.04 on Performance Tests.Current edition approved March 1,2017.Published April 2017.Originallyapproved in 1960.Last previous edition approved in 2015 as D1793 92(2015).DOI:10.1520/D1793-17.2For referenced ASTM standards, visit the ASTM website,www.astm.org,orcontact ASTM Customer Service at serviceastm.org.For Annual Book of ASTMStandards volume information, refer to the standards Document Summary page onthe ASTM website.3OVCT tile may be obtained through Armstrong Flooring from various homeimprovement stores. The following Armstrong tile substrates have been found toperform adequately for this test method:Armstrong Excelon Feature Tile:Black(56790),http:/ ASTM International,100 Barr Harbor Drive,PO Box C700,West Conshohocken,PA 19428-2959.United StatesThis international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for theDevelopment of International Standards,Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade(TBT)Committee.1 Use cheesecloth,4or a soft cotton cloth previously wet withdistilled water and well wrung out so that it is just damp andwipe up the water from the panel.Rub a small piece of drycloth very lightly over the area to remove the last of thedampness from the panel test area.Allow to stand undisturbedfor 1 h and observe(Note 3).7.2 Static TestStandard conditions of 50 6 4%
