Unit 6 I’m more outgoing than my sister. (Section B 1a-2c) ─Sheng Yanping (Ningbo Foreign Language School) Teaching aims: 1. Language focus: ① Ss will be able to use “both〞 and “-er〞 /“more ~〞 to tell the similarities and differences between people. ② Ss will be able to list qualities of a good friend with the pattern “A good friend should …〞. ③ Ss will be able to ask about the qualities of a good friend with general questions such as “Are you… Do you…〞 etc. 2. Language skills: ① Ss will be able to express their opinions on friends, such as what a friend should be like, what kind of people they would (not) like to make friends with. ② Ss will be able to use proper listening strategies(classifying) to finish listening tasks. 3. Affection: ① Ss will be interested in the topic and be willing to share their opinions with their partners. ② Ss will be fully involved in group work to reach an agreement with their group members. 4. Learning strategies Cognitive ① Ss will be an active thinker to accomplish the tasks. (积极思考以完成任务。) ② Ss will be able to seize the main points in a topic and make them well-organized by using key words or expressions.(抓住某个话题的要点,利用关键词句加以科学地组织。) Planning ③ Ss will be able to find their own way of expressing with the help of the model given by the teacher or peers. Culture Ss will be able to learn proverbs about friends while accomplishing their after-class task. Preparation: 1. Paper to hand out. 2. Seats arrangement: Each student sits together with his/her friend in the class. 3. If possible, Ss put their English names on the desk. Teaching Procedures: I. Greetings T: “Five years ago, I gave a lesson in No. 13 Middle School. Do you know how many students there were in one class at that time …How big is your class now …Is my English class smaller or bigger than yours, can you guess...In my English class, Ss sometimes watch English movies.〞 II. Lead in: Friends 1. Finding partners: T shows 3 movie posters: SpongeBob, Winnie and Harry Potter. In each poster, Ss can only see SpongeBob, Winnie and Harry Potter. Their friends beside them are covered. →Ss guess who’s in the other half. →Patrick, Piglet, Hermione and Ron→ Because they are FRIENDS. 2. Brainstorming: How do you feel when you hear the word “FRIENDS〞 Can I be your friend (Not beautiful enough) Who thinks a friend should be … What do you think a good friend should be like III. “Things that are important in a good friend〞 1. Listing: Ss work in group, listing the top four things that are important in a good friend. Each group gets ready to report their list to the class. When a group is ready to report, each member should say something. 2. Reporting: When one group reports, the other groups listen and add more to their own list. (2 groups report. Then other groups tell new points.) (1) Which one do your group not have Take it down. (2) Why do you think so (3) Reflecting: Read the list. Ask yourself: “Am I… Do I …〞 Are you a good friend yourself 3. Sharing opinions with T: (1)Share T’s list: ①A good friend should be a good listener. ②A good friend shouldn’t be a show-off. ③A good friend should be ready to help. ④A good friend should keep secrets. (2) T’s wish: “I really want to find some friends here.〞 T’s questions: “Are you a good listener …Can you keep secrets〞 Ss answer and T decides if s/he can be her friend. Ss ask T questions according to their own list to see if T can be their friends. 4. Sharing personal experiences: A warming-up for listening task. T: You are sitting together with your friends today. What do you like about her/him IV. Listening 1. Listening(1): Listen and take down the things Holly and Maria like about their friends. What do they think a good friend should be like Oral summary: “To Holly, a good friend should like to do the same things as she does/be popular/be good at sports. To Maria, a good friend should be a good listener/keep secrets.〞 Do you agree with them 2. Listening(2): What else are they talking about →Same things: “both〞; Different things: “-er〞/ “more ~〞. →Listen again and take down the same things and different things between them. 3.
