Designation:D 2447 03An American National StandardStandard Specification forPolyethylene(PE)Plastic Pipe,Schedules 40 and 80,Basedon Outside Diameter1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D 2447;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon(e)indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval. This standard has been approved for use by agencies of the Department of Defense.1.Scope1.1 This specification covers polyethylene(PE)pipe that isoutside diameter controlled, made in Schedule 40 and 80 sizesfor use with socket-type fittings and butt fittings joined by heatfusion, and pressure-rated for water(see appendix).Includedare criteria for classifying PE plastic pipe materials and PEplastic pipe,a system of nomenclature for PE plastic pipe, andrequirements and test methods for materials, workmanship, dimensions, sustained pressure, burst pressure, and environ-mental stress cracking.Requirements for marking are alsogiven.1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to regarded asthe standard. The values given in parentheses are for informa-tion only.1.3 The following safety hazards caveat pertains only to thetest methods portion,7,of this specification:This standarddoes not purport to address all of the safety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is the responsibility of the user of thisstandard to establish appropriate safety and health practicesand determine the applicability of regulatory limitations priorto use.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:D 618 Practice for Conditioning Plastics for Testing2D 792 Test Method for maximumtensile stress in the wall of the pipe in the circumferentialorientation due to internal hydrostatic water pressure that canbe applied continuously with a high degree of certainty thatfailure of the pipe will not occur.1This specification is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee F17 on PlasticPiping Systems and is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee F17.26 on OlefinBased Pipe.Current edition approved Aug.10,2003.Published September 2003.Originallyapproved in 1965.Last previous edition approved in 2001 as D 2447 01.2Annual Book of ASTM Standards,Vol 08.01.3Annual Book Drive,PO Box C700,West Conshohocken,PA 19428-2959,United States.3.2.2 pressure rating(PR)the estimated maximum pres-sure that water in the pipe can exert continuously with a highdegree of certainty that failure of the pipe will not occur.3.2.3 relation among dimensions, hydrostatic design stress, and pressure ratingthe following expression, commonlyknown as the ISO equation,6is used in this specification torelate dimensions, hydrostatic design stress, and pressurerating:2S/P 5DO/t!2 1(1)where:S=hydrostatic design stress, psi(or MPa),P=pressure rating, pse(or MPa),DO=average outside diameter,in.(or mm),andt=minimum wall thickness,in.(or mm).3.2.4 standard thermoplastic pipe materials designationcodethe pipe materials designation code shall consist of theabbreviation PE for the type of plastic, followed by the ASTMgrade in Arabic numerals and the hydrostatic design stress inunits of 100 psi with any decimal figures dropped.Where thehydrostatic design stress code contains less than two figures, acipher shall be used before the number. Thus a completematerial code consists of t
