Designation:D 2408-82 9 C k AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR TESTING AND MATERIALS 1916 Race St.,Philadelphia,Pa.19103 Reprinted from the Annual Book of ASTM Standards,Copyright ASTM If not listed in the current combined index, will appear in the next dition.Standard Test Method for FINISH CONTENT OF WOVEN GLASS FABRIC,CLEANED FINISHES,FOR PLASTIC LAMINATES AND AFTER-FINISHED WITH AMINO-SILANE-TYPE This standard is issued under the fixed designationD 2408;the number immediateIy following the designationindicates th year oforiginaladoption or,i n the case of revision, the year of last revisi0n.A number in parentheses indicates theyear of last reapproval.A superscript epsilon(E)indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope 1.1 This method covers the measurement of the amount of amino-silane finish applied to various styles of woven glass fabrics that have been suitably cleaned to remove the oils and binders present on the yarn to make them suitable for use in plastic laminates.1.2 Glass fabrics with this finish can be used with epoxy and phenolic resin systems to pro-duce laminates with a wide variefy of properties for general use and for use under conditions of high physical stress and high temperature.Nom I-Typical amino-silane finishes are known as A-1100 and soft A-1100.NOTE 2-The modified Kjeldahl method is used in this method.2.Applicable Document 2.1 ASTM Standard D$029-Specification for Finished Woven Glass Fabrics2 3.Summary of Method 3.1 Specimens are subjected fo a cyclical heating-purging-distilling procedure,The ni-trogen content of the material.is measured, which is a reliable indication of the amount of amino-silane finish on the glass fabric.4.Significance and Use 4.1 The purpose of this method is to provide a means for determining the amount of amino-silane finish on glass fabrics that have met the requirements of Specification D 4025 and whether it has been correctly applied. It is intended for use in specifications, product eval-uations,and quality control.4.2 The amho-silane finish enhances the handleability of the fabric and improves the mechanid properties of the glass fabric when used as a reinforcement in epoxy or phenolic laminates.5.Apparatus 5.1 Anabfical Balance, sensitive to 10.1 mg.5.2 Nickel Crucible,J.Lawrence Smith,17-5.3 Test Tube,high-silica glass,75-mL ca-5.4 Rubber Asbestos,ignited.6.4 Boric Acid Solution(10 g/L)-Dilute 10 mL of a saturated boric acid solution to ap-proximately 50 mL.6.5 Hydrochloric Acid(0.01 N)-Prepare and standardize a 0.01 N solution of hydro-chloric acid(HC1).6.6 Methyl Red Indicator Solution(O.1 g/100 mL)-Dissolve 0.1 g of methyl red in 100 mL of 60%ethanol.6.7 Nitrogen or Argon Gas.6.8 Potassium Hydroxide(KOH)Pellets.7.Procedure 7.1 Ignite the nickel crucible and high-silica glass test tube(containing an asbestos cushion)at 1000C for 5 min.Cool both i n a desiccator.Weigh out accurately a 1 to 2-g representative sample of the glass into the crucible.Cover the sample with about 3 g of KOH pellets.Transfer the crucible to the test tube and place the stopper containing the Kjeldahl connecting bulb and inlet tube in position.7.2 Mount the assembly on a ring stand with the bottom two-thirds of the test tube dipped into a cold crucible furnace.Connect the fur-nace to a variable transformer.7.3 Dip the delivery tube into a 250-mL Erlenmeyer flask.Add 50 mL of the boric acid solution and 3 drops of the methyl red indicator solution to the flask.(The solution should be faintly pink.)Connect the inlet tube to a nitro-gen cylinder and adjust the flow of nitrogen so that about 1 bubble per s
