Designation:D175204a(Reapproved 2013)Standard Specification forPreformed Sponge Rubber Cork and Recycled PVCExpansion Joint Fillers for Concrete Paving and StructuralConstruction1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D1752;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision,the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This specification covers preformed expansion jointfillers of the following four types for use in concrete,brick,orstone construction.1.1.1 Type ISponge rubber.1.1.2 Type IICork.1.1.3 Type IIISelf-expanding cork.1.1.4 Type IVRecycled PVC.1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regardedas standard.The values given in parentheses are mathematicalconversions to SI units that are provided for information onlyand are not considered standard.NOTE1Attention is called to Specification D994 and D1751.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2D545 Test Methods for Preformed Expansion Joint Fillersfor Concrete Construction(Nonextruding and ResilientTypes)D994 Specification for Preformed Expansion Joint Filler forConcrete(Bituminous Type)D1751 Specification for Preformed Expansion Joint Fillerfor Concrete Paving and Structural Construction(Nonex-truding and Resilient Bituminous Types)3.Ordering Information3.1 Products conforming to this specification are manufac-tured in sheet form to a range of thicknesses:14in.,38in.,12in.,34in.,and 1 in.Sheet sizes may be 3 or 4 ft in width andlengths of 3,5,6,10,or 12 ft.Purchaser must specify sheetsizes when ordering(excluding Type IVRecycled PVC).3.2 Joint filler in strip form is cut from the sheets asmanufactured.When ordering joint filler strips the purchasermust specify thickness,widths,and length;strip widths areavailable from 2 in.(50 mm)in increments of12in.(13 mm).3.3 Type IV joint filler is available in strip form,cut fromthe sheets as manufactured,and available in a range ofthicknesses:14in.,38in.,12in.,or34in.When ordering jointfiller strips,the purchaser must specify thickness,widths,andlength;strip widths are available from 2 in.(50 mm)inincrements of12in.(13 mm).4.Materials4.1 Sponge RubberThe joint filler shall consist of pre-formed strips of a durable,elastic sponge rubber compound,using synthetic rubber or natural rubber as a base and contain-ing no reclaim rubber or factice.Unless otherwise specified,the sponge rubber shall have a cement gray color to blend withconcrete in appearance.4.2 Cork and Self-Expanding CorkThe joint filler shallconsist of preformed strips that have been formed from cleangranulated cork particles securely bound together by a syn-thetic resin of an insoluble nature.4.3 Recycled PVCThe joint filler shall consist of pre-formed strips that have been extruded using scrap PVCmaterial and using either no binder or a synthetic resin of aninsoluble nature to securely bind it together.Unless otherwisespecified,the recycled PVC should have a cement gray color toblend with concrete in appearance.4.4 Preformed strips of expansion joint fillers shall be ofsuch character as not to be deformed or broken by ordinaryhandling when exposed to atmospheric conditions.Pieces ofthe joint filler which have been damaged shall be rejected.5.Requirements5.1 Test SpecimenThe sample to be tested shall be cutfrom the sheet,as manufactured,and shall be representative ofthe sheet stock.5.2 RecoveryThe test specimen shall be compressed to50%of its thickness before test.The load shall be releasedimmediately after application.At the end of 10 min after1This specification is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D04 on Roadand Paving Materials and is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee D04.34 onPreformed Joint Fillers,Sealers and Sealing Systems.Current edition approved Sept.1,2013.Published November 2013.Originallyapproved in 1960.Last previous edition approved in 2008 as D1752 04a(2008).DOI:10.1520/D1752-04AR13.2For referenced ASTM standards,visit the ASTM website,www.astm.org,orcontact ASTM Customer Service at serviceastm.org.For Annual Book of ASTMStandards volume information,refer to the standards Document Summary page onthe ASTM website.Copyright ASTM International,100 Barr Harbor Drive,PO Box C700,West Conshohocken,PA 19428-2959.United States1 release of application of the load,the specimen shall haverecovered to at least 90%of its thickness before test.5.2.1 In case of failure to comply with the aboverequirements,the test specimen shall be given three applica-tions of a load sufficient to compress the material to 50%of itsthickness before test.The load shall be released immediatelyafter each application.At the end of 1 h after the thirdapplication,the specimen shall have recovered to at least 90%of its thickness before test.5.3 CompressionThe load required to compress the testspecimen to 50%of its thickness before t
