Designation:D1187/D1187M97(Reapproved 2011)1Standard Specification forAsphalt-Base Emulsions for Use as Protective Coatings forMetal1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D1187/D1187M;the number immediately following the designation indicates theyear of original adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of lastreapproval.A superscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1NOTEUnits information was editorially corrected in June 2011.1.Scope1.1 This specification covers emulsified asphalt suitable forapplication in a relatively thick film as a protective coating formetal surfaces.1.2 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound unitsare to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated ineach system may not be exact equivalents;therefore, eachsystem shall be used independently of the other.Combiningvalues from the two systems may result in non-conformancewith the standard.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2C150 Specification for Portland CementD2939 Test Methods for Emulsified Bitumens Used asProtective Coatings3.Classification3.1 Type IQuick-setting emulsified asphalt suitable forcontinuous exposure to water within a few days after applica-tion and drying.3.2 Type IIEmulsified asphalt suitable for continuousexposure to the weather, only after application and drying.4.Materials and Manufacture4.1 Emulsified asphalt used as a protective coating for metalshall consist of asphalt, water, and emulsifying agents.5.Composition5.1 Emulsified asphalt complying with this specificationshall conform to the requirements in Table 1.6.Performance Requirements6.1 UniformityThe emulsion shall be homogeneous.Aftera thoroughly stirred sample has been held at 10C 50F in aclosed container for 48 h,there shall be no separation of water, coagulation of the asphalt base, settling,or packing in thecontainer that cannot be overcome by moderate hand stirring.6.2 ConsistencyThe emulsion shall be of a consistencythat will spread readily and permit application by brush, mop,or trowel at the rate of 1.0 L/m22.5 gal U.S./100 ft2 tovertical metal surfaces at ambient temperatures above 10C50F.See Section 17 of Test Methods D2939.6.3 StabilityThere shall be no coagulation during thecement addition or at the conclusion of the 1-min mixingperiod.6.4 The emulsion shall conform to the additional require-ments prescribed in Table 2.7.Sampling and Test Methods7.1 Sample the material, and determine the properties enu-merated in this specification in accordance with Test MethodsD2939,except for stability and flexibility.7.2 Stability:7.2.1 MaterialHigh-early-strength portland cement con-forming to the requirements for Type III of Specification C150,and having a minimum specific surface area of 1900 cm2/g133 556 in.2/lb.7.2.2 Procedure:7.2.2.1 Place about 200 g of emulsion in a tared 500-mLround-bottom porcelain dish, and weigh.7.2.2.2 Add 25 mass%portland cement based on theweight of the emulsion,in small portions while stirringconstantly with a stiff spatula.7.2.2.3 Add small amounts of distilled water if the mixturebecomes too stiff to be workable.7.2.2.4 After addition of all the cement, stir the mixturethoroughly for 1 min.7.2.2.5 Watch for any sign of coagulation of the asphalt baseduring addition of the portland cement and after the 1-minstirring period.1This specification is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D08 onRoofing and Waterproofing and is under the the metal side against the mandrel.7.3.2 Immediately after bending, visually examine the coat-ing for cracking, flaking, and loss of adhesion to the metal.Ignore hairline surface cracks that do not penetrate to themetal.7.4 Resistance to WaterSee Test Methods D2939,Section15.8.Precision and Bias8.1 No statement is made about either the precision or biasfor measuring stability or flexibility since the result merelystates whether there is conformance to the criteria for successspecified in the procedure.9.Inspection9.1 Inspection of the material shall be agreed upon betweenthe purchaser
