parentheses indicates the year of last rwpproval.A superscript epsilon(e)indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope 1.1 This test method covers the determination of one aspect of the flammability of hydraulic fluids.It is particularly useful for rating the rela-tive flammability of mists of fire resistant hy-draulic fluids.Many fluids having a useful degree of fire resistance bum when subjected to this procedure.Caution should be exercised in eval-uating the flammable Characteristics for fluids of different viscosities.1.2 This standard may involve hazardous ma-terials,operations,and equipment.This standard does not pitrport to address all o f the safety prob-lems associated with its use.It is the responsibil-ity o f whoever uses this standard to consrilt and establish appropriate safity and health practices and determine the applicability o f regulatory limi-tations prior to use.For specific precautionary statements,see 5.1 and 5.2.NOTE 1-Other ASTM procedures useful for deter-mining aspects of the relative flammability of hydraulic fluids are Test Method D 92,Test Method D 2155,and Method D 2882.A variety of other tests,many of which simulate specific flammability hazards,are commonly used for rating the relative flammability of fire-resistant fluids.1.3 This standard shottld be ttsed to measrire and describe the properties o f materials,proditcts,or assemblies in response to heat andpame under controlled laboratory conditions and shoitld not be ttsed to describe or appraise thefire hazard or fire risk o f materials,products,or assemblies tinder actual fire conditions.However,results o f this test may be tued as elements o f afire risk assessment which takes into account all o f the jctors which are Compound,Solvent,Trichlorotrifluoroethane 3.Summary of Method 3.1 The fluid to be tested is preheated,and then placed in a rotary-type(“airless”)electric paint spray gun,and sprayed into the flame of a laboratory burner.The flammability of the sam-ple is then rated by the operator on a relative scale.Fluids to be compared in relative flamma-bility shall be tested by a single operator on a single day,using the same apparatus.NOTE 2 Caution-This test should never be per-formed on any flammable liquid or on any combustible liquid having a fire point below 93C.(200F.)by the Cleveland Open Cup test method(D 92).A serious fire or explosion could result if such materiais were tested by this procedure.Because of the danger of ignition of solvent vapors by the electric arc present in the motor of the spray gun,only fire resistant cleaning solvents should be used.An accident has been reported which involved the ignition of hexane vapors in a similar apparatus.This test method is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Com-mittee D-2 on Petroleum Products and Lubricants and is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee W2.N on Hydraulic Fluids.Current edition approved Oct.28,1983.Published mm)high,free of inner cone.4.3 Meia1 Sheet approximately 14 in.wide by 20 in.long(360 by 510 mm)to intercept the excess fluid spray that does not burn or vaporize,and a metal pan approximately 14 by 20 in.long by 1 in.deep(360 by 510 by 25 mm)in which to collect the intercepted fluid.(Cafeteria-type food trays of metal have proved satisfactory for this purpose.)4.4 Siiitable Work Area for
