Designation:D115100(Reapproved 2013)Standard Practice forEffect of Moisture and Temperature on Adhesive Bonds1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D1151;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval. This standard has been approved for use by agencies of the Department of Defense.1.Scope1.1 This practice defines conditions for determining theperformance of adhesive bonds when subjected to continuousexposure at specified conditions of moisture and temperature. The performance is expressed as a percentage based on theratio of strength retained after exposure to the original strength.1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as thestandard. The values given in parentheses are provided forinformation purposes only.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2D897 Test Method for Tensile Properties of Adhesive BondsD903 Test Method for Peel or Stripping Strength of Adhe-sive BondsD906 Test Method for Strength Properties of Adhesives inPlywood Type Construction in Shear by Tension LoadingD907 Terminology of AdhesivesD1002 Test Method for Apparent Shear Strength of Single-Lap-Joint Adhesively Bonded Metal Specimens by Ten-sion Loading(Metal-to-Metal)3.Terminology3.1 DefinitionsMany of the terms in this practice aredefined in Terminology D907.4.Significance and Use4.1 This practice may be used to determine the performance, for suitable materials,in terms of any desired strength propertyof adhesive bonds.Test conditions of temperature and moistureonly are here specified. The duration of exposure is dependentupon the nature of the adhesive and the type of specimens andwill, therefore,be covered by material specifications.5.Apparatus5.1 Conditioning Cabinets or Ovens, with temperature andhumidity control.6.Test Specimens6.1 Prepare the test specimens in accordance with therecommendations of the manufacturer of the adhesive.Thespecimens should be of a suitable form and number to meet therequirements of the investigation. The specimens should con-form in detail with the requirements prescribed in the ASTMtest method covering the desired strength property,as listed inSection 2,and any other ASTM test method pertaining tostrength properties of adhesives for the desired strength test.6.2 Matched specimens should be selected for control andexposure treatments, the number to be fixed by the variabilityinherent in the method.7.Conditioning7.1 PreconditioningCondition all specimens for 7 days at50 6 2%relative humidity and 23 6 1C(73.4 6 1.8F)immediately prior to exposure,or prior to testing in the case ofcontrol specimens.Prior history of the test specimens shouldbe known and recorded.7.2 Exposure ConditionsThe exposure conditions shouldconform to one of the standard test exposures given in Table 1.8.Procedure8.1 Test the control specimens for strength by the appropri-ate test method immediately after the preconditioning period.Average the values obtained.Record this average as theoriginal strength against which the strength after exposure is tobe compared in calculating performance.8.2 Subject the preconditioned specimens to the designatedexposure conditions(Table 1)for the length of time prescribed1This practice is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D14 on Adhesivesand is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee D14.80 on Metal BondingAdhesives.Current edition approved Oct.1,2013.Published October 2013.Originallyapproved in 1951.Last previous edition approved in 2006 as D1151 00(2006).DOI:10.1520/D1151-00R13.2For referenced ASTM standards, visit the ASTM website,www.astm.org,orcontact ASTM Customer Service at serviceastm.org.For conditions at which theywere exposed,or8.2.2 Condition the specimens for 4 h at 50 6 2%relativehumidity and 23 6 1C(73.4 6 1.8F)and test immediatelythereafter,or8.2.3 Condition the specimens for 7 days at 50 6 2%relative humidity and 23 6 1C(73.4 6 1.8F)and testimmediately thereafter.8.3 Average the strength values obtained and record thevalue as the average strength of the specimens after exposure.NOTE1The conditions under which the exposed specimens are testedwill depend up
