linrd in?he currant copbinad Index, will appear in the nex1 edition.Standard Specification for MEDIUM-VOLTAGE RUBBER INSULATING TAPE This standard is issud under the fixed designation D 1373;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year of original adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.1.scope 1.1 This specification covers medium-volt-age,ozone-resistant rubber insulating tape designed for splicing electrical wires and ca-bles operating up to 35 O00 V phase-to-phase under both wet and dry locations with conduc-tor temperatures up to 90C(194F)for con-tinuous operation,to 110C(230F)for emer-gency overload conditions, and to 250C(482F)for short-circuit conditions, and for other insulating purpases. This tape is suitable for wet or dry outdoor use,but must be overwrapped to protect from ultraviolet ra-diation.This tape may be applied under an ambient temperature range from-10C(+14F)to+4OC(104F).2.Applicable Documents 2.1 ASTM Standards:D 149 Tests for Dielectric Breakdown Volt-age and Dielectric Strength of Electrical Insulating Materials at Commercial Power Frequencies2 D 150 Test for A-C Loss Characteristics and Permittivity(Dielectric Constant)of Solid Electrical Insulating Materials*D257 Tests for D-C Resistance or Con-ductance of Insulating Materials D412 Tests for Rubber Properties in Ten-Sioni D 470 Testing Thermosetting Insulated and Jacketed Wire and Cable4 3.Compound 3.1 The tape shall consist of an unvulcan-ized or partially vulcanized rubher insulating compound. The compound shall be well.evenly, and smoothly processed.cut to the specified widths, and tightly wound in rolls with a separator between layers.4.Separator 4.1 The separator shall be parchment pa-per,glazed or plastic sheeting,or any suitable material interposed between adjacent layers. The removable or nonremovable separator shall not interfere with the use of the roll during application.Where a removable sepa-rator is used, the separator shall not show any undue tendency to stick to the rubber or to ravel. The outside end of the roll shall be securely fastened.5.Tensile Strength and Elongation 5.1 The tensile strength of the tape, when tested as specified in Section 20 shall be no less than 1.7 MPa(250 psi).5.2 The elongation of a SO-mm(2-in.)gage length determined simultaneously with the tensile strength test, shall be not Jess than 500%.6.Dielechic Strength 6.1 The dielectric strength of the tape, when tested as specified in Section 21,shall be no less than 20 kV/mm(SOO V/mil)of thickness.7.Dissipation Factor and Dielectric Constant 7.1 When the tape is tested as in Section 22 and conditioned in accordance with 22.2,the maximum average dissipation factor and dielectric constant shall not exceed 0.035 and 4.5 respectively. This specification is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D-9 on Electrical Insulating Materials and is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee D09.18 on E l a s-tomeric Insulation on Cables.Current edition approved Nov.24,1978.Published January 1979.Originall ublished as D 1373-55 T.Last previous edition version or discontinued.Contact ASTM International(www.astm.org)for the latest information.9007276 0022936 243 4CTb 7.2 When the specimen is tested as out-lined in Section 22 and conditioned in accord-ance with 22.3,the maximum average dissi-pation factor and dielectric constant shall not exceed 0.1 and 5.0 respectively.7.3 This is a performance test and is to be conducted by the manufacturer when any change is made. The manufacturer shall sub-mit a copy of the test result when requested by the purchaser.8.Volume Resistivity 8.1 When the tape is tested as specified in Section 23,the average volume resistivity shall not be less than 1014 O.cm after condi-tion C-96/23/des,and not less than 1013 Cl-cm after condition C-96/23/96.8.2 This is a performance test and is to be conducted by the manufacturer when any change is made. The manufacturer shall sub-mit a copy of the test result when requested by the purchaser.9.Fusion specified in Section 24.10.Ozone Resistance 10.1 The tape shall show no injury after exposure for 3 h when tested as specified in Section 25.11.Heat Resistance 11.1 The tape shall meet the heat resist-ance test as specified in Section 26.11.2 This is a performance test and is to be conducted by the manufacturer when any change is made. The manufacturer shall sub-mit a copy of the test when requested by the purchaser.12.Dimensions 12.1 The tape shall conform to the follow-ing nominal dimensions when tested as speci-fied in
