Designation:D279217Standard Practice forSolvent and Fuel Resistance of Traffic Paint1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D2792;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This practice describes a laboratory procedure for de-termining the resistance of a dried film of traffic paint to theaction of a specified hydrocarbon solvent or gasoline fuel testfluid.1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as thestandard. The values given in parentheses are for informationonly.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.1.4 This international standard was developed in accor-dance with internationally recognized principles on standard-ization established in the Decision on Principles for theDevelopment of International Standards,Guides and Recom-mendations issued by the World Trade Organization TechnicalBarriers to Trade(TBT)Committee.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2D471 Test Method for Rubber PropertyEffect of Liquids2.2 Federal Standard:TT-S-735 Standard Test Fluids for Hydrocarbons33.Summary of Test Method3.1 The test paint is applied to a specified, properlyprepared, tin panel. After aging, the coated panel is immersedin the hydrocarbon test fluid for a specified period of time at aspecified temperature. The paint is examined for blistering, wrinkling, and loss of adhesion immediately upon removal andfor complete hardness after a specified recovery time.4.Significance and Use4.1 Traffic paints must have good resistance to motor oil andfuel drippings on the highway. This test method describes theprocedure necessary to evaluate the resistance of traffic paint toreference test fluids in order to simulate this type of action.5.Apparatus5.1 Tin PanelPanels shall be cut from bright tin plateweighing not more than 25 g and not less than 19 g/dm2(0.51to 0.39 lb/ft2).The panel should be about 75 by 130 mm(3 by5 in.).5.2 Film Applicator, which will produce a 3 or 6-mil(76 or142-m)(0.003 or 0.006-in.)wet film thickness.6.Reagents and Materials6.1 Test LiquidThe testing liquid shall be specified by thepurchaser and shall be selected from the following, dependenton the paint tested:6.1.1 Type I of Federal Specification TT-S-735 which is thesame as ASTM Reference Fuel A(Test Method D471).6.1.2 Type III of Federal Specification TT-S-735 which isthe same as ASTM Reference Fuel B(Test Method D471).7.Procedure7.1 Clean the tin panels thoroughly with a suitable solvent, and buff lightly with fine steel wool.Prepare at least 3 panelsfor each paint to be tested.7.2 Examine the test paint, remove any skins that arepresent, stir with a paddle to loosen any settled pigment, andmix thoroughly.7.3 Draw down the material on the panels using a filmapplicator that will produce a 76 or 142-m(3 or 6-mil)wetfilm as specified by the purchaser.7.4 Air dry the coating for the time specified by thepurchaser(usually 90 h)and then immerse the panels to halftheir length in the test liquid contained in a covered glassbeaker at the temperature specified by the purchaser(generally21 to 32C(70 to 90F).Use a separate beaker for each painttested.1This practice is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D01 on Paint andRelated Coatings,Materials, and Applications and is the direct responsibility ofSubcommittee D01.44 on time(usually 4 to 18 h,depending on the type of paint)remove the panels and examineimmediately for blistering, wrinkling, and loss of adhesion.7.6 Allow the panels to dry at normal temperatures for
