Designation:D 2288 97(Reapproved 2001)Standard Test Method forWeight Loss of Plasticizers on Heating1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D 2288;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon(e)indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope*1.1 This test method covers the determination of the relativevolatility of plasticizers,or volatile contaminants,or both, atelevated temperatures.1.2 The text of this test method references notes andfootnotes that provide explanatory material. These notes andfootnotes(excluding those in tables and figures)shall not beconsidered as requirements of this test method.1.3 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as thestandard.1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.NOTE1There are no ISO standards covering the primary subject ofthis test method.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:D 618 Practice for Conditioning Plastics for Testing2D 883 Terminology Relating to Plastics2D 1600 Terminology for Abbreviated Terms Relating toPlastics2E 145 Specification for Gravity-Convection and Forced-Ventilation Ovens33.Terminology3.1 GeneralDefinitions are in accordance with Terminol-ogy D 883 and abbreviations with Terminology D 1600,unlessotherwise indicated.4.Summary of Test Method4.1 Plasticizers are heated in crystallizing dishes in a circu-lating air oven on a rotating turntable,at either 105C(221F)or 155C(310F).The specimens are removed from the oven, cooled and weighed, after heating periods of 2,4,and 24 h.Theweight lost in these times is determined and reported as percentplasticizer loss.5.Significance and Use5.1 The quantity of volatile components in a plasticizer hasinfluence on fuming during processing, and the retention offlexibility and other properties in the end product(see 5.2).This test method may be used to measure the volatile compo-nents under closely controlled conditions.5.2 Results obtained by this test method are not strictlyequivalent to those obtained during processing where condi-tions of temperature and air flow are quite different.5.3 Volatility is dependent upon air flow and temperature.Due to the difficulty of controlling air flow, results may varywidely between ovens. Therefore, control plasticizers shall berun simultaneously when making close comparisons.6.Apparatus6.1 OvenForced-ventilation laboratory oven,Type II,Grade A,with rotating turntable driven at a rate of 2 to 6 rpmas specified in Specification E 145.6.2 Crystallizing Dishes,50 mm(2 in.)in diameter and 35mm(138in.)in height.7.Temperatures of Test7.1 The test temperatures shall be 105 6 1C(221 6 2F)or 1556 2C(310 6 5F).NOTE2Preferably volatile plasticizers are tested at 105C andpermanent-type plasticizers are tested at 155C.Volatile plasticizers andpermanent-type plasticizers should not be tested together,as thepermanent-type plasticizer may gain weight by absorption of volatiles.8.Conditioning8.1 ConditioningCondition the test specimens at 23 62C(73.4 6 3.6F)and 50 6 5%relative humidity for not lessthan 40 h prior to test in accordance with Procedure A ofPractice D 618,for those tests where conditioning is required. In cases of disagreement, the tolerances shall be 61C(61.8F)and 62%relative humidity.1This test method is under the jurisdiction ofASTM Committee D20 on Plasticsand is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee D20.15 on Thermoplastic Materials(Section D20.15.11).Current edition approved July 10,1997.Published April 1998.Originallypublished as D 2288 64 T.Last previous edition D 2288 92.2Annual Book of ASTM Standards,Vol 08.01.3Annual Book of ASTM Standards,Vol 10.01 and 14.02.1*A Summary of Changes section appears at the end of this standard.Copyright ASTM International,100 Barr Harbor Drive,PO Box C700,West Conshohocken,PA 19428-2959,United States.8.2 Test ConditionsConduct tests in the standard labora-tory atmosphere of 23 6 2C(73.4 6 3.6F)and 50 6 5%relative humidity, unless otherwise specified in the test meth-ods or in this specification. In cases of disagreement, thetolerances shall be6 1C(61.8F)and 62%relative humid-ity.9.Procedure9.1 Adjust the oven to the desired temperature with the airducts open.9.2 Dry the cleaned dishes in the oven at the test tempera-ture for 30 min, desiccate, cool, and tare on the analyticalbalance. This weight is WD.NOTE3Under the conditions of this test some plasticizers may gainweight due to oxidation. To eliminate this possibility, add 0.1%bisphenolA to each plasticizer in such a manner as to ensure complete dissolution.9.3 Using a pan balance, add 10.0 6 0.1 g of plasticizer toeach dish.NOTE4To mainta
