Designation:D438820Standard Specification forNonmetallic Semi-Conducting and Electrically InsulatingRubber Tapes1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D4388;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval. This standard has been approved for use by agencies of the U.S.Department of Defense.1.Scope*1.1 This specification covers nonmetallic semi-conductingand electrical insulating tapes designed for the splicing andrepair of electrical wire and cables operating at voltages up to325 kV,phase to phase.1.2 The SI values are the standard. The values stated ininch-pound units given in parentheses are for informationpurposes only.1.3 This international standard was developed in accor-dance with internationally recognized principles on standard-ization established in the Decision on Principles for theDevelopment of International Standards,Guides and Recom-mendations issued by the World Trade Organization TechnicalBarriers to Trade(TBT)Committee.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2D1711 Terminology Relating to Electrical InsulationD4325 Test Methods for Nonmetallic Semi-Conducting andElectrically Insulating Rubber Tapes3.Terminology3.1 Definitions:3.1.1 Use Terminology D1711 for definitions of terms usedin these test methods and associated with electrical or elec-tronic insulation materials.4.Classification4.1 Types:4.1.1 Type IAlow voltage rubber insulating tape designedfor use on wires and cables operating up to 2000 V phase tophase in dry locations with conductor temperatures up to 80 C(176 F)for continuous operation,up to 95 C(203 F)foremergency overload conditions, and up to 150 C(302 F)forshort-circuit conditions. For outdoor use, protect the tape fromozone attack and ultraviolet radiation by the use of a suitableoverwrap.Apply the tape to the wire or cable within anambient temperature range of 10 and 40 C(14 and 104 F).4.1.2 Type IIA medium voltage,ozone-resistant,rubberinsulating tape designed for use with wires and cables operat-ing up to 35 000 V phase to phase in either wet or drylocations with conductor temperatures up to 90 C(194 F)forcontinuous operation,up to 130 C(266 F)for emergencyoverload conditions, and up to 250 C(482 F)for short-circuitconditions when installed in accordance with the manufactur-ers instruction. For wet or dry outdoor use, protect the tapefrom ultraviolet radiation by the use of a suitable overwrap.Apply the tape to the wire or cable within an ambienttemperature range of 10 and 40 C(14 and 104 F).4.1.3 Type IIIA high voltage,ozone-resistant,rubber in-sulating tape designed for use with wires and cables operatingup to 138 000 V phase to phase in either wet or dry locationswith conductor temperatures up to 90 C(194 F)for continu-ous operation,up to 130 C(266 F)for emergency overloadconditions, and up to 250 C(482 F)for short-circuitconditions when installed in accordance with the manufactur-ers instructions. This tape is suitable for wet or dry outdooruse.Apply the tape to the wire or cable within an ambienttemperature range of 10 and 40 C(14 and 104 F).4.1.4 Type IVA nonmetallic semi-conducting tape de-signed for shielding various portions of joints and terminationsin electrical wires and cables operating at any voltage underwet or dry conditions with conductor temperatures up to 90 C(194 F)for continuous operation,or up to 130 C(266 F)foremergency overload conditions. This tape is suitable for wet ordry outdoor use.Apply the tape to the wire or cable within anambient temperature range of 10 and 40 C(14 and 104 F).4.1.5Type VA higher voltage,ozone-resistant,rubberinsulating tape designed for use with wires and cables operat-ing up to 325 000 V phase to phase in either wet or drylocations with conductor temperatures up to 90 C(194 F)forcontinuous operation,up to 130 C(266 F)for emergency1This specification is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee
