Designation:D230807(Reapproved 2013)Standard Specification forThermoplastic Polyethylene Jacket for Electrical Wire andCable1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D2308;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This specification covers a thermoplastic jacketing com-pound for 2 to 35 kV wire and cable,of at least 0.030 in.(0.76mm)nominal thickness, consisting substantially of pigmentedpolyethylene.1.2 In many instances the jacket material cannot be testedunless it has been formed around a conductor or cable. Therefore, tests done on jacketed wire and cable in thisspecification are solely to determine the relevant property ofthe jacket material and not to test the jacketed conductor orcompleted cable.1.3 Whenever two sets of values are presented,in differentunits, the values in the first set are the standard, while those inparentheses are for information only.2.Referenced of),nexposure of materials to air at 100C for either 24 or 48 h.4.Physical Properties4.1 The polyethylene before application to the wire or cableshall comply with the requirements for Type I,Class C,Category 4 or 5,Grade E5 or J3 of Specification D1248,orClass B with equivalent weathering requirements to Class Cmaterials. The requirements of Specification D1248 shall notapply to the jacket removed from the wire or cable.Thecompound is suitable for exposure to sunlight and otheratmospheric environments at temperatures between 55and+75 C,and a minimum installation temperature of 40C.4.2 Specimens removed from the wire or cable and tested at20 to 28 C(68 to 82 F)shall conform to the requirements forphysical properties specified in Table 1.Alternatively,thejacket shall be air-oven aged without removal from theconductor.4.3 Environmental Stress-Cracking TestThe jacket shallconform to the requirements for Grade E5 as specified inTable 3 of Specification D1248.4.4 Absorption CoeffcientSee Test Method D3349.In-stead of testing the jacket removed from the conductors, acertification by the polyethylene compound manufacturer thatthis requirement has been complied with shall suffice.5.Electrical Properties5.1 The polyethylene jacket shall conform to the require-ments for electrical properties specified in Table 2.6.Sampling6.1 Unless otherwise instructed, sample the jacket in accor-dance with Test Methods D2633.7.Test Methods7.1 Unless otherwise instructed, test the jacket in accor-dance with Test Methods D2633.7.2 Environmental Stress-Cracking Test Test in accor-dance specimens pass the test described, the lot ofcable that they represent shall be considered to meet therequirements of this specification.8.2 If any specimen fails to pass these tests, the length ofcable from which the specimen was taken shall be consideredas not meeting the requirements of this specification.Retestnew specimens from each of two other lengths of cable fromthe lot of cable under
