Designation:D2846/D2846M19aAn American National StandardStandard Specification forChlorinated Poly(Vinyl Chloride)(CPVC)Plastic Hot-andCold-Water Distribution Systems1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D2846/D2846M;the number immediately following the designation indicates theyear of original adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of lastreapproval.A superscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval. This standard has been approved for use by agencies of the U.S.Department of Defense.1.Scope*1.1 This specification covers requirements, test methods, assembly, and methods of marking for chlorinated poly(vinylchloride)plastic hot-and cold-water distribution system com-ponents made in one standard dimension ratio and intended forwater service up to and including 180 F(82 C).Thesecomponents comprise pipe and tubing,socket-type fittings, street fittings,plastic-to-metal transition fittings, solventcements, and adhesives.Requirements and methods of test areincluded for materials, workmanship, dimensions andtolerances, hydrostatic sustained pressure strength, and ther-mocycling resistance. The components covered by this speci-fication are intended for use in residential and commercial, hotand cold, potable water distribution systems.1.2 The products covered by this specification are intendedfor use with the distribution of pressurized liquids only, whichare chemically compatible with the piping materials.Due toinherent hazards associated with testing components and sys-tems with compressed air or other compressed gases somemanufacturers do not allow pneumatic testing of their products.Consult with specific product/component manufacturers fortheir specific testing procedures prior to pneumatic testing.NOTE1Pressurized(compressed)air or other compressed gasescontain large amounts of stored energy which present serious safetyhazards should a system fail for any reason.1.3 The text of this specification references notes, footnotes, and appendixes which provide explanatory material.Thesenotes and footnotes(excluding those in tables and figures)shallnot be considered as requirements of the specification.1.4 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound unitsare to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated ineach system may not be exact equivalents;therefore, eachsystem shall be used independently of the other.Combiningvalues from the two systems may result in non-conformancewith the standard.NOTE2Suggested hydrostatic design stresses and hydrostatic pressureratings for pipe, tubing, and fittings are listed in Appendix X1.Design andinstallation considerations are discussed in Appendix X2.An optionalperformance qualification and an in-plant quality control program arerecommended in Appendix X3.1.5 The following safety hazards caveat pertains only to thetest method portion,Sections 9 and 10,of this specification:This standard does not purport to address all of the safetyconcerns,if any, associated with its use.It is the responsibilityof the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the appli-cability of regulatory limitations prior to use.1.6 This international standard was developed in accor-dance with internationally recognized principles on standard-ization established in the Decision on Principles for theDevelopment of International Standards,Guides and Recom-mendations issued by the World Trade Organization TechnicalBarriers to Trade(TBT)Committee.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2D1598 Test Method for Time-to-Failure of Plastic PipeUnder Constant Internal PressureD1599 Test
