Designation:D 1758 06Standard Test Method ofEvaluating Wood Preservatives by Field Tests with Stakes1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D 1758;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon(e)indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This test method covers accelerated procedures fordetermining the relative permanence and effectiveness of woodpreservatives in stakes exposed in field plots.1.2 The requirements for preparation of the material fortesting and the test procedures appear in the following order:SectionsSummary of Test Method3Test Plot4Test Specimens5Pretreatment Selection of Test Stakes6Treatment Procedure7After Treatment Handling of Test Stakes8Installation of Stakes9Inspection of Specimens10Evaluation of Results11Reports121.3 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as thestandard. The values given in parentheses are for informationonly.1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2D 246 Test Method for Distillation of Creosote andCreosote-Coal Tar SolutionsD 390 Specification for Coal-Tar Creosote for the Preserva-tive Treatment Method3.1 Wood stakes are impregnated with an appropriate seriesof retentions of a preservative, and then handled, prior toexposure in the field, according to specified procedures.Thetreated stakes are exposed in the ground to the action ofwood-destroying fungi and termites in one or more selectedfield plots. An index of condition determined from gradesassigned to the stakes for degree of decay and termite attack, inthe course of periodic inspections,is used to express resultsperiodically and at the termination of the test.3.2 Two test procedures are outlined, employing two speci-men types,34-in.square and nominal 2 by 4-in.stakes,designated hereafter respectively as Method A and Method B.Method A,using smaller and more numerous specimens, ispreferred for possibly more rapid results, and Method B forlonger-term tests of a quasi service nature.4.Test Plot4.1 General RequirementsA warm humid climate is pre-ferred.Select a natural area of fertile, fallow, level land ofuniform soil character that is moist but well drained and largeenough to permit expansion of future stake installations.Thepresence of wood-destroying fungi and active subterraneantermites shall be proved by observation or experience andchecked by exposure of suitable small specimens of untreatedwood. No natural or artificial fertilizer or other chemicals shallbe applied to the plot during its use as a test ground.Protectionagainst fire, predators, and pilferage shall be provided as far aspracticable.4.2 Control of VegetationAs a general rule, vegetationshall be controlled manually or by suitable mechanical meansonly and with minimum soil disturbance. No chemical controlsshall be permitted.Weeding and cleaning the plot shall beuniform over any given test area.4.3 Reuse of GroundStakes placed in ground that hasbeen used previously for test purposes shall not be set closerthan 150 mm(6 in.)to any earlier stake location.5.Test Specimens5.1 Selection of WoodSapwood of southern pine(Pinusspp.),with 6 to 10 rings per inch, shall be the preferred woodfor comparative tests. It shall be free of knots,excessivecross-grain and resins,or other obvious defects, and it shall1This test
