Designation:D334522Standard Test Method forLaboratory Evaluation of Wood for Resistance toSubterranean Termites1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D3345;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This test method covers the laboratory evaluation oftreated or untreated wood for its resistance to subterraneantermites. This test is considered as a screening test for treatedmaterial and further evaluation by field methods is required.1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as thestandard. The values given in parentheses are for informationonly.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety, health, and environmental practices and deter-mine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.(WarningSee 7.1.4.)1.4 This Cultures:Soil/Block TestAWPA E1 Laboratory Method for Evaluating the TermiteResistance of Wood-Based Materials:Choice and NoChoice Tests3.Choice or No-Choice Methodology3.1 There are two types of basic termite bioassays:3.1.1 Choice testtermites are presented with two feedingtargets which may or may not contain insecticidal components.Difference in mass loss may be indicative of preference oravoidance of one material over another.3.1.2 No-choice testtermites are presented with a singularchoice and mass loss indicates ability of the insect to consumethe material. In no-choice tests, mortality data is needed todetermine dose mortality based on consumption of the testmaterial, which is often treated with suspected insecticidalcompounds.NOTE1It is recommended that both choice and no-choice tests beperformed when evaluating materials for resistance to subterraneantermites as the different tests address different behavioral responses of thetermites.3.2 Details regarding test methodology shall be included inthe final report, and use of choice or no-choice,or both, shallbe indicated in the report title.4.Apparatus4.1 Containers,Clear,Clean Glass or Plastic, with looselyfitting
