Designation:D280214Standard Specification forOzone-Resistant Ethylene-Alkene Polymer Insulationfor Wire and Cable1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D2802;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval. This standard has been approved for use by agencies of the U.S.Department of Defense.1.Scope*1.1 This specification covers an ozone-resisting crosslinkedrubber insulation compound for electrical wires and cables. The polymer shall consist substantially of ethylene-alkenecopolymer(EAM)or ethylene-alkene diene terpolymer(EADM).This polymer type includes ethylenepropylene copo-lymer(EPM)and ethylenepropylene diene terpolymer(EPDM).1.2 This type of insulation is considered suitable for use onwire or cable which will be used in wet and dry locations withconductor temperatures up to 90C during continuousoperation,to 130C during emergency overload conditions, and to 250C during short-circuit conditions. It is consideredsuitable for all sizes and voltage classifications of single-andmultiple-conductor power cables up to 35 000 V phase-to-phase at the 100%insulation level and up to 25 000 V at the133%insulation level as listed in Table 1D of Test MethodsD470.Single-conductor cables shall have a supplementarycovering over the insulation, and multiple-conductor cablesshall have an overall covering.1.3 Whenever two sets of values are presented,in differentunits, the values in the first set are the standard, while those inparentheses are for information only.1.4 In many instances the insulation material cannot betested unless it has been formed around a conductor or cable. Therefore, tests are done on insulated wire or cable in thisspecification solely to determine the relevant property of theinsulation and not to test the conductor or completed cable.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2D470 Test Methods for Crosslinked Insulations and Jacketsfor Wire and CableD1711 insulation shall conform to the require-ments for physical properties specified in Table 1.4.2 The values specified in Table 1 are applicable only toinsulation having a nominal wall thickness of 0.030 in.(0.76 mm)or greater.5.Electrical Requirements5.1 Order of TestingPerform the ac voltage withstand, insulation resistance, and dc voltage withstand tests in thatorder when any of these tests are required. The sequence forother testing is not specified.5.2 AC Voltage Withstand TestEach insulated conductor inthe completed cable shall withstand for 5 min the ac test1This specification is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D09 onElectrical and Electronic Insulating Materials and is the direct responsibility ofSubcommittee D09.18 on Solid Insulations,Non-Metallic Shieldings and Coveringsfor Electrical and Telecommunication Wires and Cables.Members of ASTMCommittees D02 on Petroleum Products and Lubricants, and B07 on Light Metalsand Alloys, have contributed to this an acceptable substitute(see the dc test voltagedescribed in 5.5).5.3 Insulation Resistance:5.3.1 Each insulated conductor in the completed cable shallhave an insulation resistance value of not less than thatcorresponding to a constant of 20 000 M-1000 ft at 15.6C.When the temperature of the water in which the insulation istested differs from 15.6C,the measured value obtained shallbe multiplied by the proper correction factor from Table 2 ofTest Methods D470.Use the coefficient supplied by themanufacturer for this particular compound or determine thecoefficient as described by Test Methods
