Designation:D401614Standard Test Method forViscosity and Gel Time of Chemical Grouts by RotationalViscometer(Laboratory Method)1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D4016;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope*1.1 This test method covers the determination of viscosityof catalyzed chemical grouts with a rotational viscometer(laboratory method),over the range from 1.0 mPas to 1000mPas(1.0 to 1000 cP).1.2 All observed and calculated values shall conform to theguidelines for significant digits and rounding established inPractice D6026.1.2.1 The procedures used to specify how data are collected/recorded or calculated,in this standard are regarded as theindustry standard. In addition, they are representative of thesignificant digits that generally should be retained. The proce-dures used do not consider material variation, purpose ofobtaining the data, special purpose studies,or any considera-tons for the users objectives;and it is common practice toincrease or reduce significant digits of reported data to becommensurate with these considerations. It is beyond the scopeof this standard to consider significant digits used in analysismethods for engineering design.1.3 The values stated in SI units are the standard.Otherunits provided in parentheses are for the convenience of theuser.1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety problems,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2D653 Terminology Relating to Soil,Rock, and ContainedFluidsD6026 definitions of terms used in this standard, refer to Terminologies D653 and E1142.4.Summary of Test Method4.1 A rotating spindle is immersed in a container of cata-lyzed chemical grout. The test specimen viscosity is obtainedfrom the drag on the spindle exerted by the test specimen, andthe rotational speed of the spindle.5.Significance and Use5.1 This test is intended for materials that will penetrate soilvoids and rock fissures.Viscosity alone is not necessarily anexact index of grout penetrability.6.Apparatus6.1 Rotational ViscometerThe essential instrumentationrequired providing the minimum rotational viscometer analyti-cal capabilities for this method include:6.1.1 A drive motor to apply a unidirectional rotationaldisplacement to the specimen at a rate from 0.3 revolutions perminute(rev/min)to 60 rev/min constant to within 1%.6.1.2 Aforce sensor to measure the torque developed by thespecimen.6.1.3 A coupling shaft or other means to transmit therotational displacement from the motor to the specimen.6.1.4 A geometry, spindle, tool or rotational element to fixthe specimen between the drive shaft and a stationary positionwith a range of 1 mPas to 1000 mPas.NOTE1Each spindle typically covers a range of about 2 decades ofviscosity. The spindle is selected so that the measured viscosity is between20 and 80%of the range of the spindle.6.1.5 A guard to protect the spindle from mechanicaldamage.6.1.6 A temperature sensor to provide an indication of thespecimen temperature over the range of 15C(59F)to 25C(77F)readable to within 6 0.1C(0.2F).1This test method is under the jurisdiction ofASTM Committee D18 on Soil andRock and is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee D18.15 on Stabilization WithAdmixtures.Current edition approved June 15,2014.Published July 2014.Originallyapproved in 1981.Last previous edition approved in 2008 as D4016 08.DOI:10.1520/D4016-14.2For referenced ASTM standards, visit the ASTM website,www.astm.org,orcontact ASTM Customer to provide a controlled isothermaltemperature environment for the specimen applicable to thetemperature range of this method.6.1.8 A temperature controller capable of operating thetemperature bath at an isothermal temperature over the range of15C(59F)to 25C(79F)constant to within 6 0.5C(61F).6.1.9 A data collection device,to provide a means ofacquiring, storing, and displaying measured or calculatedsignals,or both. The minimum output signals required forrotational viscosity are
