Designation:D 2770 01An American National StandardStandard Specification forOzone-Resisting Ethylene-Propylene Rubber IntegralInsulation and Jacket for Wire and Cable1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D 2770;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon(e)indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This specification covers a weather-and ozoneresistingvulcanized rubber integral insulation and jacket compound forelectrical wires and cables. The rubber polymer shall consistsubstantially of ethylenepropylene copolymer(EPM)or ofethylenepropylene terpolymer(EPDM).1.2 This type insulation is considered suitable for use onwire or cable which will be used for continuous operation atconductor temperatures up to 90C in dry locations and 75Cin wet locations, and at operating voltages not exceeding 2000V.1.3 The values stated in inch-pound units, except for tem-perature,are regarded as the standard. The values in parenthe-ses are for information only.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:D 470 Test Methods for Crosslinked Insulations and Jacketsfor Wire and Cable23.Physical Properties3.1 The crosslinked integral covering shall conform to therequirements for physical properties specified in Table 1.3.2 Thickness of InsulationThe average thickness of theinsulation shall be not less than that given in Table 2.Theminimum thickness shall be not less than 90%of the specifiedthickness.4.Electrical Requirements4.1 Order of TestingPerform the ac voltage withstand, insulation resistance, and dc voltage withstand tests in thatorder when any of these tests are required. The sequence forother testing is not specified.4.2 AC Voltage Withstand TestEach length of integrallycovered conductor shall withstand for 5 min the ac voltagespecified in Table 2,unless the dc test in 4.4 is performed.4.3 Insulation ResistanceThe integrally covered conduc-tor shall have an insulation resistance not less than thatcorresponding to a constant of 10 000 at 60F(15.6C).Wherethe temperature of the water in which the insulation is testeddiffers from 60F,the measured value obtained shall bemultiplied by the proper correction factor for the particularcompound as previously determined by the manufacturer.4.4 DC Voltage Withstand TestUpon completion of theinsulation resistance test, each length of integrally coveredconductor shall withstand for 5 min the dc test voltagespecified in Table 2 unless the ac test described in 4.2 isperformed.4.5 Accelerated Water AbsorptionThe integral coveringshall meet the requirements of Table 3.The Electrical MethodTest shall be conducted at 60 Hz with the water temperature at75 6 1C.The water temperature in the Gravimetric MethodTest shall be 70 6 1C.5.Ozone Resistance5.1 The integral covering shall show no injury after expo-sure for 3 h to an ozone concentration of between 0.025 and0.03%volume.6.Sampling6.1 Sample the integral insulation and jacket in accordancewith Test Methods D 470.1This specification is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D09 onElectrical and Electronic Insulating Materials and is the direct responsibility ofSubcommittee D09.18 on Solid Insulations,Nonmetallic Shieldings and
