)Designation:D 2558-69(Reapproved 1984)I I 0-Standard Test Method for ATTACHING ADHESIVES EVALUATING PEEL STRENGTH OF SHOE SOLE-This standard is issued under the futed designation D 2558;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year of original adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.A superscript epsilon(e)indicates an editorial change since thelast revision or reapproval.1.Scope i.1 This test method covers the determination of the peel strength of the adhesive bond on shoe soling materials.1.2 This standard may involve hazardous ma-terials,operations,and equipment. This standard does not purport to address all o f the safety prob-lems associated with its 14S:It i s the responsibil-ity o f whoever uses this standard to consult and establish appropriate safely and health practices and determine the applicability o f regulatory limi-tations prior to use.2.Summary of Method 2.1 Shoe soling materials are bonded to stand-ard control materials under controlled condi-tions.The peel strength measurements are made under specified conditions and intervals.3.Significance and Use 3.1 This method can be used to evaluate the bondability of soling materials, and to evaluate and compare the performance of shoe adhesives on specific soling materials.4.Description of Terms 4.1 Heat-Activated Adhesives-Those adhe-sives-converted by heat into a tacky softened state that will permit them to fuse, coalesce,or weld to a substrate or to another adhesive film under pressure.4.2 Peel Strength-The average load per unit width of bond required to produce progressive separation of two laminated adherends under conditions designated in this method.4.3 Shoe Adhesives-Adhesive systems used to attach shoe soling materials permanently to shoe uppers.4.4 Shoe Soling-Material of elastomeric na-ture such as synthetic rubber compositions in solid or cellular state or as plastic compositions, for example, the plasticized poly(viny1 chloride)type.5.Apparatus 5.1 Tension Test Machine-The machineand loading range shall be so selected that the maxi-mum load on the specimen falls between 15 and 85%of the upper limit of the loading range. The rate of movement between heads shall remain essentially constant. The machine shall be equipped with suitable grips capable of clamping the specimens fmly and without slippage throughout the tests. The machine shaU be au-tographic,producing a chart that can be read in terms of inches of separation as one coordinate and applied load as the other coordinate.5.2 Source o f Infrared Heat capable of pro-ducing temperatures of 225F(107C)in the adhesive films within 60 s.5.3 Cushioned Pressure Device with parallel plates capable of exerting 60 psi(4.22 kgf/cm2)uniformly on the adhesive film(see Fig.1).One plate must be cushioned to provide intimate contact pressure over the entire adherend surface. The pressure device must be capable of operating at reduced pressures with soft or cellular soling materials to minimize distortion of the laminate under pressure.I This test method is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Com-mittee D-14 on Adhesives.Current edition effective May 9,1969.Orginally issued 1966.Replaces D 2558-66 T.The basic form of this method was developed by the Rubber Manufacturers Asn.and the present method i s based on the test procedure adopted by the Shoe Division of The Society of the Plastics Industry.NOTICE:This standard has either been superseded and replaced by a new version or discontinued.Contact ASTM International(www.astm.org)for the latest information.ASTM D2558 69 0759510 0026029 O 5.4 Constant-Temperature Oven capable of operating at either 105F(41C)or 120F(49C).5.5 Ross Flex Testing Machine as described in ASTM Method D 1052,Test for Rubber De-terioration-Cut Growth Using Ross Flexing Apparatus2 6.Test Specimen 6.1 The test specimen shall consist of an 8 by 1-in.(20.3 by 2.54-cm)sample of soling material bonded to a standard 8 by 1-in.(20.3 by 2.54-cm)control adherend.6.1.1 With elastomeric soling materials, the standard control adherend3 shall be a rubber composition soling material Ys in.(3.18 mm)thick with superior bonding properties, with a specific gravity of 1.23 f 0.02,a surface hardness of 93 to 96,Durometer A,a National Bureau of Standards abrasive index of 35 f 4,(Method B ofASTM Methods D 394-47,Test for Abrasion Resistance of Rubber Compounds4),and elon-gation of 375 f 25%at break. All values shall be checked at 73.4 5 2F(23 f 1.1C).6.1.2 With vinyl plastic soling materials, the standard control adherend5 shall be YS in.(3.18 mm)thick, and with the following properties:Hardness,Durometer A 80 min Specific gravity I.22 f 0.02 Tensile strength 2000 psi Elongation 220 2 25%Abrasive index 70 min 100%modulus 1200 min All tests shall be made at 73.4 k 2F(23 k 1.f OC).in.(1.27 cm)in From each end to permit using the same test specimen for room temperature and oven-age tests.6.3 The standard control adh
