Designation:D249707(Reapproved 2012)Standard Tolerances forManufactured Organic-Base Filament Single Yarns1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D2497;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 These tolerances cover first-quality,manufactured,organic-base filament single yarns(namely,bright,semi-dull,dull,solution-dyed,bleached,unbleached,etc.)regardless ofthe package type. These tolerances cover permissible varia-tions in linear density, tenacity, elongation, twist, and commer-cial weight.1.1.1 These tolerances do not apply to rubber yarns,span-dex yarns,metal-covered yarns, nor to bulk yarns since testmethods for these types of yarn are not available.Thesetolerances do not apply to industrial filament yarns.NOTE1Tolerances for inorganic glass yarns are given in Specifica-tions and Methods D578.1.2 This standard covers only tolerances. It does not coverspecifications or quality levels, for yarns to be used for anypurpose.Specifications for specific properties are subject toagreement by the purchaser and the supplier.NOTE2While the tolerances specified may be applied to yarn takenfrom fabric, the properties of such yarns will likely differ from the originallevel.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2D123 Terminology Relating to TextilesD578 Specification for Glass Fiber StrandsD1423 Test Method for Twist in Yarns by Direct-CountingD1907 Test Method Terminology D4849.3.1.1 The following terms are relevant to this standard:tolerances.3.2 For all other terminology relating to textiles, refer toTerminology D123.4.Significance and Use4.1 These tolerances may be used as a guide in purchaser/supplier disputes,or to assist in assigning nominal values forlinear density and twist. The tolerances listed for each propertyrepresent the maximum variations deemed acceptable in thetrade.5.Test Methods5.1 Take a sample of yarn as directed in Practice D2258.Make the indicated tests as directed in Test Method D1907 forYarn Number,Test Method D1423 for Direct Twist,TestMethod D2256 for Single Strand Breaking Strength, and TestMethod D2494 for Commercial Mass.6.Tolerances6.1 Linear DensityThe average linear density shall con-form to the average linear density agreed upon between thepurchaser and the supplier with the tolerances specified inTable 1.6.2 StrengthThe average breaking force of the yarn deter-mined in single strand tests or the average force at a specificlevel of elongation,in each packing case of ten or more yarnpackages or on a beam, shall be equal to or exceed thepreviously agreed upon level.6.3 ElongationThe average elongation of the yarn at thebreaking force or at a specified force,in each packing case often or more yarn packages or on a beam, shall conform to thelimits:specified elongation 6 20%of the specified averageelongation.1These tolerances are under jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D13 on Textilesand are the direct responsibility of Subcommittee D13.58 on Yarns and Fibers.Current edition approved July 1,2012.Published August 2012.Originallyapproved in 1963 replacing D1235,D1236,and D1237.Last previous editionapproved in 2007 as D2497 07.DOI:10.1520/D2497-07R12.2For referenced ASTM asspecified.6.4.2 Number of TurnsThe average number of turns perunit length of yarn,in each packing case of ten or more yarnpackages or on a beam, shall conform to the tolerancesspecified in Table 2.6.5 Commercial MassCommercial mass shall conform tothe limits:invoice mass 6 1.0%of the invoiced mass.NOTE3Particular attention is drawn to the results of an interlabora-tory test described in Section 10 of Method D2494.7.Conformance7.1 The purchaser and the supplier may agree on a proce-dure to establish conformance, including
