Designation:D3909/D3909M14Standard Specification forAsphalt Roll Roofing(Glass Felt)Surfaced With MineralGranules1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D3909/D3909M;the number immediately following the designation indicates theyear of original adoption or,in the case of revision,the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of lastreapproval.A superscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.This standard has been approved for use by agencies of the U.S.Department of Defense.This specification replaces Federal Specification SS-R-630,Class 3.1.Scope1.1 This specification covers asphalt-impregnated andcoated glass felt roll roofing surfaced on the weather side withmineral granules,for use as a cap sheet in the construction ofbuilt-up roofs.1.2 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound unitsare to be regarded separately as standard.The values stated ineach system may not be exact equivalents;therefore,eachsystem shall be used independently of the other.Combiningvalues from the two systems may result in non-conformancewith the standard.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2D228 Test Methods for Sampling,Testing,and Analysis ofAsphalt Roll Roofing,Cap Sheets,and Shingles Used inRoofing and WaterproofingD1079 Terminology Relating to Roofing and Waterproofing3.Terminology3.1 DefinitionsFor definitions of terms used in thisspecification,refer to Terminology D1079.4.Materials and Manufacture4.1 The glass felt shall be a thin,porous sheet composedpredominately of fine glass fibers uniformly deposited in anonwoven pattern.The felt may be reinforced with random,orparallel oriented glass yarns,or both,which may be gathered ortwisted,bonded or unbonded.The felt shall contain a water-insoluble agent.4.2 In the process of manufacture,the glass mat shall beuniformly impregnated and coated on both sides with anasphaltic material,permitted to be compounded with a mineralstabilizer.4.3 The weather side shall be uniformly surfaced withmineral granules firmly embedded in the asphaltic coating,except for any selvage.4.4 The reverse side shall be covered with a material toprevent sticking in the roll.5.Physical Properties5.1 The material shall conform to the dimensions andmasses prescribed in Table 1 and areas prescribed in Table 2.5.2 The finished product shall not crack nor be so sticky asto cause tearing or other damage upon being unrolled attemperatures between 10 and 60C 50 and 140F.5.3 Pliability at 25C 77FAt least eight strips out often from the granule-surfaced portion of the sheet shall notcrack when tested in accordance with Section 10 of TestMethods D228.5.4 Mass Loss and Behavior on HeatingThere shall be nomore than 1.5%volatile loss,and the granular surfacing shallnot slide more than 2 mm 116in.when tested in accordancewith Section 11 of Test Methods D228.6.Workmanship,Finish,and Appearance6.1 The glass felt shall be thoroughly and uniformly im-pregnated with asphalt and shall show no uncoated fibers.Thefiber pattern may be discernible on the back side.6.2 The surface of the weather side shall be uniform infinish and texture.The mineral granules shall be uniformlydistributed in a smooth layer over the entire surface,except forany selvage,and shall be firmly embedded in the asphaltcoating.6.3 When a selvage is provided,the line of demarcationbetween the surfaced and unsurfaced portions of the sheet shallbe straight and parallel to the edges of the sheet.A suitablematerial shall be applied to prevent sticking of the coatedselvage in the roll.1This specification is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D08 onRoofing and Waterproofing and is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee D08.04on Felts,Fabrics and Bituminous Sheet Materials.Current edition approved July 1,2014.Published August 2014.Originallyapproved in 1980.Last previous edition approved in 2004 as D3909 97b(2012)1.DOI:10.1520/D3909_D3909M-14.2For referenced ASTM standards,visit the ASTM website,www.astm.org,orcontact ASTM Customer Service at serviceastm.org.For Annual Book of ASTMStandards volume information,refer to the standards Document Summary page onthe ASTM website.Copyright ASTM International,100 Barr Harbor Drive,PO Box C700,West Conshohocken,PA 19428-2959.United States1 6.4 The asphalt coating and the material applied to thereverse side of the sheet to prevent sticking in the roll shall beuniform over the entire surface.6.5 The finished material shall be free of visible defectssuch as holes,ragged or untrue edges,breaks,cracks,tears,protuberances,and indentations.7.Sampling and Test Methods7.1 Sample the material and determine the properties enu-merated in this specification in accordance with Test MethodsD228.8.Inspection8.1 InspectionInspection shall be in accordance with therequirements of this specification.8.2 Inspection AlternativesAlternative inspection require-ments shall be determined by and as agreed upon between thepurchaser and the supplier.9.Rej
