is issued under the fuced designation D 4353:the number immediately following the designation indicates the year of driginal adoption or,in the case of revision,the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.A superscript epsilon(c)indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope I.1 This test method covers the determination of the basic stability of a mechanical pump dis-penser and product.1.2 This test method covers accelerated usage evaluations of mechanical pump dispensers and product;simulated storage evaluations of me-chanical pump dispensers,and product;and chemical compatibility of the individual com-ponents of mechanical pump dispensers and product.1.3 This standard may involve hazardous ma-terials,operations,and equipment.This standard does not purport to address all of the safety prob-lems associated with its use.It is the responsibhty of whoever uses this standard to consult and establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limi-tations prior to Ilse.Specific precautions are given in Section 5.2.Applicable Documents 2.1 ASTMStandards:D4041 Method for Determining Spray Pat-terns of Manually Operated Pump Dispen-sers*D4332 Practice for Conditioning Containers,Packages,or Packaging Components for Testing*E 122 Recommended Practice for Choice of Sample Size to Estimate the Average Quality of a Lot or Process3 3.Significance and Use 3.1 Determining the accelerated usage,simu-lated storage,and chemical compatibility of me-chanical pump dispensers and product is neces-sary in order to determine the acceptability of a mechanical pump dispenser for consumer usage.4.Apparatus 4.1 Containers,that will allow the mechanical pump dispenser to be affixed to them(Note 1)and also be capable of containing product for a period of time at various environmental condi-tions(Note 2).A minimum of 46 is recom-mended.NOTE l-If possible,the actual container to be mar-keted should be used.NOTE 2-The number of containers is arbitrary and can be changed according to need.4.2 Glass Containers and Closures,capable of containing product and a disassembled mechan-ical pump dispenser.Also,the glass container and closure must be capable of effecting a sealed unit and not be reactive with the product at various environmental conditions(Note 3).A minimum of 10 containers is recommended.NOTE 3-The number of glass containers and clo-sures is arbitrary and can be changed according to need.4.3 Product,sufficient amount to fill 46 con-tainers in accordance with 4.1,and 10 glass con-tainers in accordance with 4.2.4.4 Stereo/Zoom Microscope,capable of mag-nification up through 30X,and Oven(38”C),maintained at 38+3C(100.4 zk 5.4”F).4.5.5 Oven(SOY),maintained at 50+-3C(122 3I 5.4”F).4.5.6 Cycle Chamber,alternating 5 to 50C(41 to 122F)every 24 h.5.Precautions 5.1 Appropriate handling considerations should be given to flammable,toxic,caustic,or other potentially hazardous material used.6.Sampling 6.1 Based upon the desired precision,sam-pling shall be performed in accordance with Rec-ommended Practice E 122.6.2 In the absence of any special sampling plan,performance shall be based on not less than the number of representative specimens exposed to any of the environmental conditions as speci-fied in Section 9.7.Test Specimens 7.1 Test specimens shall be clean,dry,and previously unused mechanical pump dispensers.8.Conditioning 8.1 Condition the test specimens at 23+2C(73&3.6”F)and 50+-5%.Relative humidity for not less than 24 h prior to test shall be in accordance with the procedures of Practice D 4332.9.Sample Preparation 9.1 Accelerated Usage-Prepare 22
