Designation:D 3714-87 AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR TESTING AND MATERIALS 1916 Race St.Philadelphie.Pa.19103 Reprinled irom Ihe Annual Book 01 ASTM Siandards.Copyrlghl ASTM II not listed in Ihe current combined Index.will appear in Ihe next edillon.Standard Test Method for BLACK MARKING RESISTANCE OF FLOOR POLISHES AS MEASURED BY THE LADDER AND PENDULUM APPARATUS1 This standard is issued under the fixed designation D 3714;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year of original adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of!;1st reapproyal.A superscript epsilon(.)indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.ScOpe 1.1 This test method covers the determination of the comparative degree of black marking of floor polishes by the ladder-pendulum apparatus with a rubber block.1.2 This standard may involve hazardous ma-terials,operations.and equipment. This standard does not purport to address alia/the sqety prob-lems associated with its use.It is the responsibil-ity of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate sqety and health practices and determine the applicability 0/regulatory limitations prior to use.2.Referenced Document 2.1 ASTM Standard:D 1436 Methods for Application of Emulsion Floor Polishes to Substrates for Testing Purposes2 3.Definition 3.1 black marking-black marks on a flooring surface usually caused by the impact of the soles and heels of footwear.4.Significance 4.1 The black markings obtained in this test are quite similar to those which occur on a floor in normal use.Comparing results of tests of various polishes will indicate the relative degree of black marking that will occur when these polishes are used on a floor and subjected to normal foot traffic.4.2 A control sample should be included in each test.5.Apparatus 5.1 Ladder-Pendulum Apparatus with 3-ft ladder-See Fig.I.5.2 Rubber Testing Block,51 by 51 by 13 mm(2 by 2 by III in.)in thickness.5.3 Official Vinyl Composition Tile(OVCT),3 white,305 by 305 mm(12 by 12 in.).6.Test Specimen(Tile Preparation)6.1 Coat the tile in accordance with Method D 1436 or similar coating method.6.2 Regardless of the method for coating the tile.use only one method if a series of tests are being run on a single polish or on a group of polishes.6.3 The coated test specimen should dry 24 h before testing.6.4 A control sample should be included in each test.7.Preparation of Rubber Test Block 7.1 Before each test, prepare the rubber block as follows:Place a sheet of 400-A carborundum paper on a flat surface.Sand the rubber test block gently on all sides by moving the rubber test block back and forth four times on each side.I This test method is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Com-mittee 0-21 on Polishes, and is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee D21.04 on Performance Tests.Current edition approved March 27.1987.Published May 1987.Originally published as D 3714-78.Last previous edition D3714-82.Z Annual Book oj ASTM Standards.Vol I S.04.J Available from Chemical Specialties Manufacturers Assn.1001 Connecticut Ave.N.W.Washington.D.C.20036.NOTICE:This standard has either been superseded and replaced by a new version or discontinued.Contact ASTM International(www.astm.org)for the latest information.8.Procedure(see Fig.1)8.1 Carefully level the ladder-pendulum ap-paratus in all directions.8.2 Check to make sure the pendulum is free-swinging.8.3 Tape the polished tile to the floor.8.4 Position the rubber test block as in Fig.2.8.5 With the pendulum in a vertical position, rest the rubber test block on the polish-coated tile using the 51-mm(2 in.)adjustment slot so that only the weight of the bottom 38-mm(1112-in.)aluminum channel stock and rubber block is brought to bear on the polished tile.Tighten the winged nuts on the adjustment slot so that the rubber test block is in a locked position.8.6 The ladder has a tendency to move. This can be prevented by adding a weight to the top or by using double adhesive tape on the bottom of the legs.8.7 Raise the pendulum 45 deg from the rest position(Fig.2)and release the pendulum,allow-ing it to drop by its own weight only so that the rubber block will strike the polish-coated tile.2 D3714 8.8 Raise the pendulum 90 deg from the rest position(Fig.2)and release the pendulum,allow-ing it to drop by its own weight only so that the rubber block will strike the polish-coated tile.8.9 Move the tile or ladder after each test so the previous black mark is not disturbed.8.10 Make several tests in accordance with 8.6 and 8.7 for easier and a more precise evaluation.9.Report 9.1 The report shall include the following:9.1.1 Identification of the specimen being tested, and 9.1.2 Relative intensity of black marking as seen on the tile surface.Report according to the following classification:height and intensity of black marking.to.Precision and Bias 10.1 This method differentiates between pol-ishes that resist black marking well and tho
