ASTM D2410 82 0757510 0025418 b-!-Designation:D 2410-82 4CTb AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR TESTING AND MATERIALS 1916 Race St.,Philadelphia,Pa.19103 Reprinted from the Annual Book of ASTM Standards,Copyright ASTM If not listed in the current combined index, will appear in the next edition.Standard Test Method for FINISH CONTENT OF WOVEN GLASS FABRIC,CLEANED PLASTIC LAMINATES AND AFTER-FINISHED WITH CHROME COMPLEXES,FOR This standard is issued under the fixed designation D 2410;the number immediately following the designationindicates the year of original adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.A superscript epsilon(E)indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope 1.1 This method covers the measurement of the amount of chrome-complex finish applied to various styles of woven glass fabric that have been suitably cleaned to remove the oils and binders present on the yarn to make them suitable for use in polyester laminates.1.2 Glass fabrics with this finish can be used with polyester, epoxy, and phenolic resin sys-tems to produce laminates with a wide variety of properties for general use and for use under conditions of high physical stress and moist environment.NOTE 1-This method is based on the use of a Fisher AC Electrophotometer or equivalent.2.Applicable Document 2.1 ASTM Standard:D 4029 Specification for Finished Woven Glass Fabrics 3.Summary of Method 3.1 Specimens are boiled in sodium hydrox-ide solution. The chromium content of the material is measured, which is a reliable indi-cation of the amount of chrome-complexfrnish on the glass fabric.4.Significance and Use 4.1 The purpose of this method is to provide a means for determining the amount of chrome-complex finish on glass fabrics that have met the requirements of Specification D 4029 and whether it has been correctly ap-plied.It is intended for use in specifications, product evaluation, and quality control.4.2 The chrome-complex finish enhances the handleability of the fabric and improves the mechanical properties of the glass fabric when used as a reinforcement in epoxy or phenolic laminates.5.Apparatus 5.1 Electrophotometer.6.Reagents and Materials 6.1 Sodium Hydroxide Solution(100 g/L)-Weigh out 100 g of sodium hydroxide(NaOH,chemically pure),dissolve in distilled water, and dilute to 1 L.6.2 Potassium Dichromate,Standard Solii-tions-Place several grams of potassium di-chromate(K2Cr207)in a weighing bottle.Heat the weighing bottle(lid off)for 1 h at 212 to 220F.Replace the cover on the weighing bot-tle and allow to cool in a desiccator for 30 min.-Weigh accurately 0.8484 g into a 50-mL beaker and dissolve in distilled water.Transfer quan-titatively to a 1000-mL volumetric flask, dilute to the mark, and mix well. This solution wiii contain 0.0003 g chromium/mL.Use this final solution for calibration.7.Calibration 7.1 By buret add 5 mL of standard KzCr207 solution to a 100-mL volumetric flask. Then This method is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Com-mittee D-20 on Plastics and is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee D 20.18 on Reinforced Thermosetting Plas-tics.Current edition approved July 30,1982.Published Octo-ber 1982.Originally published as D 2410-65 T.Last pre-vious edition D 2410-81.Annual Book ofASTMSlandards,Part 33.1 NOTICE:This standard has either been superseded and replaced by a new version or discontinued.Contact ASTM International(www.astm.org)for the latest information.ASTM D24LO 82 W 0759530 0025439 13 add 2 mL of NaOH solution, dilute to the mark with distilled water, and mix well.7.2 Rinse a 25-mL photometer cell with some of this solution and then fill the cell.Measure the color against distilled water in the photometer using a 425-B filter,“By setting. For detailed instruction on measurement of color, see 7.1.The reading for this solution is equivalent to 0.01%chromium on a 1.5-g sam-ple.7.3 For the next point, add 10 mL of stand-ard KzCr2O7 solution(by buret)to a 100-mL volumetric flask,Add 2 mL of NaOH solution, dilute to the mark with distilled water, and mix well,Measure the color of this solution as before. The reading for this solution is equiva-lent to 0.02%chromium.7.4 Continue preparation of solutions as above in accordance with the following chart:Chromium,%0.01 0.02 0.03 0.04 0.05 0.06 Standard solu-tion,mL 5 IO 15 20 25 30 Plot photometer reading versus percent chro-mium on graph paper.8.Procedure 8.1 Weigh exactly 1.5 g of sample, cut into small pieces, and place in a 400-mL beaker.Add 25 mL of NaOH solution,35 mL of dis-tilled water, and 1.0 g of sodium peroxide.Cover the beaker with a watch glass and boil vigorously for 8 min or until frothing ceases. If necessary, add distilled water from a wash bot-tle to keep the solution from boiling dry, taking care not to lose any solution.Cool the mixture to room temperature.8.2 Pour the solution into a 100-mL volu-metric flask.Wash the sample with distilled water into a flask and continue t
