Designation:D 3406 95(Reapproved 2000)Standard Specification forJoint Sealant,Hot-Applied,Elastomeric-Type,for PortlandCement Concrete Pavements1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D 3406;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon(e)indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This specification covers an elastomeric-type one com-ponent,hot-applied concrete joint sealant, resistant to weath-ering,for use in sealing joints and cracks in Portland cementconcrete highway and airfield pavements.1.2 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.Specific precautionstatements are given in Appendix X1.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:D 5167 Practice for Melting of Hot-Applied Joint andCrack Sealant and Filler for Evaluation2D 5249 Specification for Backer Material for Use withCold-and Hot-Applied Joint Sealants in Portland-CementConcrete and Asphalt Joints2D 5329 Test Methods for Sealants and Fillers,Hot-Applied,for Joints and Cracks in Asphaltic and Portland CementConcrete Pavements23.General Requirements3.1 The joint sealant, when in place, shall form a resilientand cohesive compound that is resistant to weathering, andshall effectively seal joints in concrete throughout repeatedcycles of thermal expansion and contraction, and against theinfiltration of moisture and incompressibles. It shall not flowfrom the joint or be picked up by vehicle tires. The jointsealant, before placement, shall be stable at the safe heatingtemperature for up to 6 h.The poured joints shall be free ofinternal voids due to placement or that develop subsequently inservice.4.Physical Requirements4.1 Safe Heating TemperatureThe highest temperature towhich the sealing compound can be heated and still conform toall the requirements specified herein. For the purposes oftesting as specified hereafter, the pouring temperature forspecimen preparation shall be the safe heating temperature, asrecommended by the sealant manufacturer. The safe heatingtemperature shall be shown on all containers and shall beprovided to the testing agency before any laboratory tests arebegun. The safe heating temperature shall be a minimum of20F(11C)higher than the manufacturers recommendedapplication temperature(See Appendix X1).4.2 Cone Penetration,Non-ImmersedAt 77 6 0.2F(256 0.1C),150 g,for 5 s,shall not exceed 130 units.4.3 FlowThere shall be no flow after 72 h at 158 6 2F(70 6 1C).4.4 BondThe sealant shall be tested at 0 6 2F(17.861.1C)for three complete cycles of 50%extension each.Allthree specimens shall meet the following requirements forbond:4.4.1 Nonimmersed No specimen shall develop anycrack, separation,or other opening in the sealing compound orbetween the sealing compound and the concrete blocks.4.4.2 Water-Immersed No specimen shall develop anycrack, separation,or other opening in the sealing compound orbetween the sealing compound and the concrete blocks.4.5 ResilienceWhen tested at 77 6 0.2F(25 6 0.1C),the recovery shall be a minimum of 60%.4.6 Resilience,Oven-AgedWhen conditioned in a forced-draft oven maintained at 158 6 2F(70 6 1C)for 24 6 2 h,and tested at 77 6 0.2F(25 6 0.1C),the recovery shall be aminimum of 60%.4.7 Artificial WeatheringAfter 160 h exposure, the jointsealant shall not flow, show tackiness, the presence of anoil-like film or reversion to a mastic-like substance, formsurface blisters, either intact or broken, form internal voids, have surface crazing, cracking, hardening,or loss of rubber-like properties.Evidence of physical change in the surface ofthe material by visual and tactile examination shall constitutefailure of this test.4.8 Tensile Adhesion The average of three test specimensshall be a minimum of 500%elongation.4.9 Flexibility When conditioned in a forced-draft ovenmaintained at 158 6 2F(706 1C)for 72 h,and bent at 90over a 0.25 in.(6.4 mm)diameter mandrel, the specimen shall1This specification is under the jurisdiction of Committee D04 on Road andPaving Materials and is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee D04.33 onFormed-In-Place Sealants for Joints and Cracks in Pavements.Current edition approved Feb.15,1995.Published April 1995.Originallypublished as D 3406 85.Last previous edition D 3406 85(1991)e1.2Annual Book of ASTM Standards,Vol 04.03.1Copyright ASTM,100 Barr Harbor Drive,West Conshohocken,PA 19428-2959,United States.have no indication of surface crazing or cracking.5.Sampling and Heating5.1 Sampling:5.1.1 Samples may be taken at the plant or warehouse priorto delivery,or at the time of delivery,at the option of thepurchaser. If sampling is done prior to shipment, the inspec
