Designation:D343095(Reapproved 2021)Standard Test Method forClarity and Yellowness of Liquid Water-Based Clear FloorPolishes1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D3430;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This test method covers measurement of the degree ofclarity and depth of yellowness of water-based clear floorpolishes.1.2 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety, health, and environmental practices and deter-mine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.1.3 This international standard was developed in accor-dance with internationally recognized principles on standard-ization established in the Decision on Principles for theDevelopment of International Standards,Guides and Recom-mendations issued by the World Trade Organization TechnicalBarriers to Trade(TBT)Committee.2.Terminology2.1 Definitions:2.1.1 absorbancethe negative logarithm,to the base 10,ofthe ratio of the radiant power transmitted through a sample tothe radiant power incident upon the sample.Hence,as theclarity decreases or the depth of the yellowness increases theabsorbance increases.3.Significance and Use3.1 The laboratory technique described in this test method isused to evaluate the clarity and yellowness of water-based“clear”floor polishes for product development or qualitycontrol purposes.4.Apparatus4.1 Colorimeter,2equippedwithcylindrical20-mmmatched cells.(If 20-mm cells are not available,10-mmmatched cells may be substituted.)4.2 Any colorimeter having equivalent resolution and sen-sitivity may be used with the appropriate matched cells.5.Sampling5.1 The sample shall be representative of the material to betested and the portion used for the test shall be representativeof the sample itself.5.2 Calibration SampleAny emulsion polymer that visu-ally exhibits little or no yellowness, selected for dilution(see6.1).6.Preparation of Correction Graph6.1 Prepare minimum of five dilutions of the calibrationsample with distilled water so that absorbance reading between0.00 and 0.16 at 500 nm are obtained.Measure the absorbanceat both 500 nm and 400 nm for each dilution(see Section 7).6.2 Plot the absorbance at 500 nm versus that at 400 nm andfit a straight line through the resulting points starting from theorigin(see Fig.1).6.3 It is necessary to prepare a correction graph only oncefor a given instrument and set of cells.7.Procedure7.1 Adjustment of ColorimeterSet the colorimeter at 500nm and at 0 absorbance with distilled water as a blank in oneof the matched cells.1This test method is under the jurisdiction ofASTM Committee D21 on Polishesand is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee D21.03 on Chemical and PhysicalTesting.Current edition approved March 1,2021.Published March 2021.Originallyapproved in 1975.Last previous edition approved in 2016 as D3430 95(2016).DOI:10.1520/D3430-95R21.2Spectronic 70 has been found satisfactory. The sole source of supply of theapparatus known to the committee at this time is Milton-Roy,820 Linden Ave.,Rochester,NY.If you are aware of alternative suppliers, please provide thisinformation to ASTM International Headquarters.Your comments will receivecareful consideration at a meeting of the responsible technical committee,1whichyou may attend.Copyright ASTM International,100 Barr Harbor Drive,PO Box C700,West Conshohocken,PA 19428-2959.United StatesThis international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for theDevelopment of International Standards,Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade(TBT)Committee.17.2 AbsorbanceFill the companion cell with sample andplace in the cell holder.Read and record the absorbance.Thisreading is indicative of the degree of turbidity.7.3 Adjustment of ColorimeterReset the colorimeter at400 nm and at 0 absorbance with distilled water as a blank inone of the matched cells.7.4 AbsorbanceRead and record the absorbance of thesample. This reading is indicative of the uncorrected yellow-ness.7.5 CorrectionThe corrected value for yellowness is therecorded absorbance from 7.2 corrected to 400 nm from thecorrection graph.Subtract this value from the total absorbanceat 400 nm,7.4.The difference is the absorbance due toyellowness.8.Report8.1 Report the absorbance, indicating the cell size,to thenearest 0.01 unit based on duplicate determinations.9.Precision and Bias9.1 PrecisionDuplicate determinations obtained on thesame colorimeter that agree within 60.02 units are acceptablefor averaging. Results are comparabl
