Designation:D 3405 97An American National StandardStandard Specification forJoint Sealants,Hot-Applied,for Concrete and AsphaltPavements1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D 3405;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon(e)indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This specification covers joint sealants of the hot-pouredtype intended for use in sealing joints and cracks in portlandcement concrete and asphaltic concrete pavements.1.2 This standard does not purport to cover the propertiesrequired of sealants for use in areas of portland cementconcrete pavement subject to jet fuel or other fuel spillage, such as aircraft refueling and maintenance areas.1.3 The values stated in inch-pound units are the standard.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:D 5167 Practice for Melting of Hot-Applied Joint andCrack Sealant and Filler for Evaluation2D 5249 Specification for Backer Material for Use withCold-and Hot-Applied Joint Sealants in Portland-CementConcrete and Asphalt Joints2D 5329 Test Methods for Sealants and Fillers,Hot-Applied,for Joints and Cracks in Asphaltic and Portland-CementConcrete Pavements23.General Requirements3.1 The joint sealant shall be composed of a mixture ofmaterials that will form a resilient and adhesive compoundcapable of effectively sealing joints and cracks in concrete andasphaltic pavements against the infiltration of moisture andforeign material throughout repeated cycles of expansion andcontraction with temperature changes, and that will not, atambient temperatures, flow from the joint or be picked up byvehicle tires. The material shall be capable of being brought toa uniform pouring consistency suitable for completely fillingthe joints without inclusion of large air holes or discontinuitiesand without damage to the material. It shall remain relativelyunchanged in application characteristics for at least 6 h at therecommended pouring temperature in the field(see AppendixX1).4.Physical Requirements4.1 Safe Heating TemperatureThe safe heating tempera-ture is the highest temperature to which the sealant can beheated and still conform to all the requirements specifiedherein. For purposes of testing as specified hereinafter, thepouring temperature shall be the same as safe heating tempera-ture.The safe heating temperature shall be set forth by themanufacturer and shall be shown on all containers and shall beprovided to the testing agency before any laboratory tests arebegun.4.2 Cone Penetration,Non-Immersedat 77F(25C),150g,5 s shall not exceed 90.4.3 Flowat 140F(60C)shall not exceed 3.0 mm whentested for 5 h.4.4 Bond,Non-ImmersedThe sealant shall be testedat 20F(29C)for three complete cycles. The developmentat any time during the test procedure of a crack, separation, orother opening that at any point is over14in.(6.4 mm)deep, inthe sealant or between the sealer and concrete block, shallconstitute failure of the test specimen. The depth of the crack, separation,or opening shall be measured perpendicular to theside of the sealant showing the defect. All three specimensmust meet this requirement for bond.4.5 ResilienceWhen tested at 77F(25C),the recoveryshall be a minimum of 60%.4.6 Asphalt CompatibilityThere shall be no failure inadhesion, formation of an oily exudate at the interface betweenthe sealant and the asphaltic concrete,or softening or otherdeleterious effects on the asphaltic concrete or sealant whentested at 140F(60C).5.Sampling and Heating5.1 Sampling:5.1.1 Samples may be taken at the plant or warehouse priorto delivery or at the time of delivery,at the option of thepurchaser. If sampling is done prior to shipment, the inspectorrepresenting the purchaser shall have free access to the materialto be sampled. The inspector shall be afforded all reasonablefacilities for inspection and sampling which shall be conductedso as not to interfere unnecessarily with the operation of theworks.5.1.2 Samples shall consist of one of the manufacturersoriginal sealed containers selected at random from the lot or1This specification is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D-4 on Roadand Paving Materials and is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee D04.33 onFormed-In-Place Sealants for Joints and Cracks in Pavements.Current edition approved May 10,1997.Published February 1998.Originallypublished as D 3405 75 T.Last previous edition D 3405 96.2Annual Book of ASTM Standards,Vol 04.03.1Copyright ASTM,100 Barr Harbor Drive,West Conshohocken,PA 19428-2959,United States.batch of finished material.A batch or lot shall be considered asall finished material that was manufactured simultaneously orcontinuously as a unit between the time of compounding andthe time of packaging or placing in shipping containers.5.1.3 Obtain the sealant portion for testing from the selectedmanufacturers ori
