Designation:D 3202 94(Reapproved 2000)Standard Practice forPreparation of Bituminous Mixture Beam Specimens byMeans of the California Kneading Compactor1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D 3202;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon(e)indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This practice covers the preparation of beams of bitu-minous paving mixtures by means of a mechanical compactorthat imparts a kneading action compacting the beam by a seriesof individual impressions made with a ram.1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regardedas the standard. The values given in parentheses are forinformation only.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:D 1561 Practice for Preparation of Bituminous Mixture TestSpecimens by Means of California Kneading Compactor23.Significance and Use3.1 This practice provides a standard method for compac-tion useful to practitioners and researchers engaged in testingand evaluation of bituminous mixtures using beam formspecimens.4.Apparatus4.1 California Kneading Compactor, mechanical,in accor-dance with Practice D 1561.4.2 Compactor Foot A ram 2.0 by 3.0 in.(50.8 by 76.2mm).4.3 RodA round-nose steel rod,38-in.(9.5-mm)in diam-eter by 16-in.(406.4-mm)long.4.4 MoldAbeam mold with inside dimensions 15 in.(381mm)long by 314in.(82.6 mm)wide and 412in.(114.3 mm)high as shown in Fig.1.4.5 Leveling BarAsteel bar 14.94 in.(379.5 mm)long by3.19 in.(81.0 mm)wide by 1.00 in.(25.4 mm)deep, stiffenedby a beveled-ended spline 12.94 in.(328.6 mm)long by 1.00in.wide by 1.00 in.deep, centered on and welded to the top ofthe bar;or a solid steel bar of equal length and width havingdepth sufficient to provide at least equal stiffness as determinedby the moment of inertia about the neutral axis.4.6 Sliding Base AssemblyAn assembly attached to thekneading compactor with a hand wheel or other means formoving the mold laterally during compaction.4.7 Extraction AssemblyA beam specimen extraction as-sembly as shown in Fig.2.NOTE1Copies of working drawing of the mold, sliding base assem-bly,leveling bar and extraction assembly suitable for construction of thesepieces of apparatus are available as adjunct material.34.8 Paper, heavy sheets,3.25 by 15 in.(82.6 by 381 mm).4.9 Ovens, electric, capable of maintaining temperatures of200 to 325 6 5F(93.3 to 162.8 6 2.8C).4.10 Testing Machine, compression, having a minimumcapacity of 50 000 lbf(222 kN).4.11 Balance, having a capacity of 5 kg or more andsensitive to 1.0 g or less.4.12 Miscellaneous ApparatusThermometer, spatulas, spoons, gloves, metal pans, and mechanical mixer.5.Test Specimens5.1 Preparation of MixturePrepare approximately 6800 gof the bituminous mixture in accordance with 5.1 and 5.2 ofPractice D 1561 except for specific requirements given in 5.2and 6 of this practice.5.2 Size of SpecimensThe beam test specimens shall havea rectangular cross section of 314in.(82.6 mm)in width by 312in.(88.9 mm)in depth and a length of 15 in.(381 mm).6.Procedure6.1 Temperatures The mixing temperatures shall be thatcorresponding to an asphalt viscosity of 170 6 20 cSt.Compaction temperature shall be that corresponding to anasphalt viscosity of 5006 50 cSt.6.2 Molding Specimens:6.2.1 Heat the mold and the round-nose rod to the compac-tion temperature specified in 6.1.Lightly oil the mold and1This recommended practice is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D04on Road and Paving Materials and is the base plate.Maintain the compac-tor foot sufficiently hot prevent the mixture from adhering to it.6.2.2 The compaction process is in three layers with eachlayer having three levels of compaction. Each of the threelayers is composed of one third of the required amount ofmixture for one specimen. After pouring the material for eachlayer into the mold in a uniform layer, rod the mixture 20 timesin the center of the mass and 20 times around the edge bymeans of the round-nose rod. When applying tamping blows t
