Designation:D343399(Reapproved 2020)Standard Test Method forFracture Strength in Cleavage of Adhesives in Bonded MetalJoints1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D3433;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This test method(1,2,3,4,5)2covers the determinationof fracture strength in cleavage of adhesives when tested onstandard specimens and under specified conditions of prepara-tion and testing(Note 1).1.2 This test method is useful in that it can be used todevelop design parameters for bonded assemblies.NOTE1While this test method is intended for use in metal-to-metalapplications it may be used for measuring fracture properties of adhesivesusing plastic adherends, provided consideration is given to the thicknessand rigidity of the plastic adherends.1.3 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as thestandard. The values given in parentheses are for informationonly.1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety, health, and environmental practices and deter-mine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.1.5 This international standard was developed in accor-dance with internationally recognized principles on standard-ization established in the Decision on Principles for theDevelopment of International Standards,Guides and Recom-mendations issued by the World Trade Organization of the crack.Completely linear-elastic behav-ior is assumed in the calculations(see Annex A1)of G used inthis method,an allowable assumption when the zone ofnonlinear deformation in the adhesive is small relative tospecimen dimensions and crack size.1This test method is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D14 onAdhesives and is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee D14.80 on MetalBonding Adhesives.Current edition approved Jan.1,2020.Published January 2020.Originallyapproved in 1975.Last previous edition approved in 2012 as D3433 99(2012).DOI:10.1520/D3433-99R20.2The
