Designation:D302101(Reapproved 2012)Standard Specification forPhthalocyanine Green Pigments1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D3021;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This specification covers chlorinated and chlorinated-brominated copper phthalocyanine green pigments in drypowder form, for use in paints, printing inks, and relatedproducts.A variety of commercial types are available to meetthe requirements of different end uses.1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded asstandard. No other units of measurement are included in thisstandard.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2D280 Test Methods for Hygroscopic Moisture(and OtherMatter Volatile Under the Test Conditions)in of Blue Pig-ments3.Composition and Properties3.1 The pigments shall consist of the product known com-mercially as phthalocyanine green, with or without phthalo-cyanine blue or other ingredients incorporated during manu-facture to improve or alter the properties of the pigment, butfree of any other coloring matter either organic or inorganic. The pigment shall conform to the following requirements:Moisture and other volatile matter,max,%3.0Coloring matter other than phthalocyaninesnone3.2 Mass Color and Character of TintThe mass color, andthe character of the tint formed by mixture with a whitepigment, and the strength, shall be within mutually agreed-upon limits of a standard acceptable to both the purchaser andthe seller.3.3 Oil AbsorptionThe oil absorption shall be between 90and 110%of that of a reference sample mutually agreed uponbetween the purchaser and the seller.3.4 Reaction in Identification TestsThe pigment shallshow the same reaction in identification tests(5.5-5.8)as areference sample mutually agreed upon between the purchaserand the seller.4.Sampling4.1 Two samples shall be taken at random from differentpackages from each lot, batch, days pack,or other unit ofproduction in a shipment. When no markings distinguishingbetween units of production appear, samples shall be takenfrom different packages in the ratio of two samples for each4545 kg or(10 000 lb),except that for shipments of less than1000 lb,two samples shall be taken. At the option of thepurchaser, each sample may be tested or samples from thesame production may be blended in equal quantities to form acomposite sample.5.Test Methods5.1 Tests shall be conducted in accordance with the appro-priate ASTM test methods.Test procedures not covered byASTM test methods shall be mutually agreed upon between thepurchaser and the seller.5.2 Moisture and Other Volatile MatterMethod A of TestMethods D280.5.3 Mass Color and Tinting StrengthTest Method D387.5.4 Oil AbsorptionTest Method reddishcolor forms, depending on the degree of bromination.Pour thesolution into 250 mL of water and stir. The phthalocyaninegreen will immediately precipitate as a flocculent mass.5.5.2 Filter off the should be clearly evident, indicating organically combined copper.NOTE1Characteristic spectrophotometric absorption spectra in thenear infrared range(700 to 900 nm)are exhibited by dilute solutions ofcopper phthalocyanine pigments(2 to 50 mg/L)in H2SO4(sp gr 1.84).The absorption maxima are so sharp and well defined that they may beused for positive qualitative identification of the various phthalocyaninepigments.Phthalocyanine green has maxima at approximately 820 and860 nm for bromine-free types;for
