ASTM D3779 86 m 0757510 0033182 T w-73J7 Designation.D 3979-88 4 T b AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR TESTINQ AND MATERIALS 1916 Race SI.,Philadelphia,Pa.19103 Reprinted from the Annual Book of ASTM Standards,Copyright ASTM If not listed in the current combined index,will appear in the next edition.Standard Test Method for PARTICULATE MATTER IN TRICHLOROTRIFLUOROETHANE This standard is issued under the Iked designation D 3979;the number immediately foilowing the designation indicates the year of original adoption or,in the case of revision,the year of last revision.A number in parenthew indicates the year of l a s t reapproval.A supempt epsilon(e)indicates au editorial change since thelast cevkion or reapprod.A.SAMPLING 1.scope I.1 This test method covers the sampling of ultra-clean grade solvent from 55-gal drums and tank trucks.1.2 Since a heterogeneous sample is being taken,thorough agitation during sampling k nec-essary.Care must be exercised in avoiding con-tamination from the surroundings.1.3 This standard may involve hazardous ma-terials,operations,and equipment.This standard does not purport to uddress all o f the safity prob-lems associated with its use.It is the responsibil-ity of whoever uses this standard to consult and establish appropriate safity and health practices and determine the applicability o f regulatory limi-tations prior to use.A specific precautionary statement is given in Section 6.2.Summary of Method 2.1 Instrucfions are given for sampling of ul-tra-clean grade solvent so that a representative sample of particulate matter will be obtained.3.Significance snd Use 3.1 This test method can be employed to ob-tain representative samples for the determination of particulate matter in trichlorotrifluoroethane from 55-gal drums and tank trucks.4.Apparatus NOTE 1-Equivalent apparatus may be used.4.1 Stainless Steel Probe,Y4 in.outside di-4.2 Stainless Steel Tube,Yi in.outside diam-4.3 TFE-Fluorocarbon Disk having Ya in.X 6 ameter,tofal length about 40 in.eter,about 20 in.in length.in.diameter.4.4 TFE-Fluorocarbon Stopper.4.5 Vinyl Tubing and a double-acting rubber 4.6 Bottle,amber,I-gal capacity.bulb(vacuum).5.Reagents ethane.6.Safety Precautions 6.1 The solvent removes natural oils from skin.Avoid repeated skin contact.The solvent is not flammable and has a threshold limit value of loo0 ppm by volume in air.Sample in the clean-est area available,preferably a white room.7.Procedure 5.I Ultra-clean grade trichlorotrifluoro-7.1 Sampling o f 55-gal Drum:7.1.1 Set up the apparatus shown in Fig.I.7.1.2 Rinse all parts of the apparatus coming in contact with the trichlorotrifluoroethane being sampled with ultra-clean trichlorotrifluoroethane prior to sampling.7.I.3 Insert the stainless steeI probe into the 2 in.bung of the drum.7.1.4 The sample is drawn by creating a vac-uum in the sample bottle with the rubber bulb.A rubber bulb is preferred to an electric vacuum pump as it eliminates a possible source of oiI contamination.7.k.5 As the sample is being drawn,the probe should be raised and lowered in the drum with a slow,swirling action.This will assure a repre-sentative sample.This test meihod is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Com-mittee D-26 on Halogenated Organic Soltents and is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee D26.04 on Test Methods.Current edition approved April 25.1986.Published July 1986.Originally published as D 3979-81.Last previous edition D 3979-81.1 NOTICE:This standard has either been superseded and replaced by a new version or discontinued.Contact ASTM International(www.astm.org)for the latest information.A S T M D3979 8b 8 0757530 0033383 3 a 7.1.6 TFE tubing on the tip of the probe will minimize the possibility of chipping of the drum lining with the probe.7.1.7 The center hole in the 6 in.TFE-fluo-rocarbon disk should be of such size that the disk will rest on the rim of the flange while the sample is being taken and admit a minimum amount of atmospheric contamination.7.1.8 After the sample is drawn,cap the bottle with“Bake Cap.”There is sufficient material to run two complete series of tests.7.2 Tank-Truck Sampling:NOTE 2-The following procedure is for sampling tank trucks equipped with a circulating pump.if the tank truck is not equipped with a circulating pump,it will be necessary to modi the procedure to ensure that a representative sample is obtained.(See Fig.2.)7.2.1 Circulate the ultra-clean grade tri-chlorofrifluoroethane in the tank truck by means of the circulating pump for at least 30 min.7.2.2 Be sure that the sample outlet of the circulating system is free of large particles.if necessary,open the valve slightly and flush the sampje outlet for a few minutes.7.2!3 Slowly open the valve on the sample outlet line and flush the sample receiver three times.7.2.4 Collect sample and cap the bottle.7.2.5 Figure 2 illustrates an industrial system for trichlorotrifluoroethane storage and tank transport.8.Precision and Bias 8.1 Statement of absolute bias is not possible;however,the
