the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision,the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon(e)indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This test method covers the determination of the color ofcresylic acids.The material under test is compared to arbitrarycolor standards that are expressed in terms of the“C”seriescolor standards.21.2 The following applies to all specified limits in this testmethod for purposes of determining conformance with thisstandard.An observed value or a calculated value shall berounded off“to the nearest unit”in the last right hand digit usedin expressing limit,in accordance with the rounding off methodof Practice E 29.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any,associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and qualitycontrol and specification purposes by producers and users.4.Apparatus4.1 Bottles for Color Standards and for Testing,clear andunblemished,clean,French square,flint glass,flat-bottom,glass-stoppered,30-mL(1-oz)capacity bottles holding 31 to 33mL when filled to the neck.5.Reagents5.1 Purity of ReagentsReagent grade chemicals shall beused in all tests.Unless otherwise indicated,it is intended thatall reagents shall conform to the specifications of the Commit-tee on Analytical Reagents of the American Chemical Society,where such specifications are available.7Other grades may beused provided it is first ascertained that the reagent is ofsufficiently high purity to permit its use without lessening theaccuracy of the determination.5.2 Purity of WaterUnless otherwise indicated,referencesto water shall be understood to mean reagent water conformingto Specification D 1193,Type IV minimum.5.3 Ferric Chloride(FeCl36H2O).5.4 Cobalt Chloride(CoCl26H2O).5.5 Hydrochloric Acid(sp gr 1.19)Concentrated hydro-chloric acid(HCl).6.Hazards6.1 Consult current OSHA regulations,suppliers MaterialSafety Data Sheets,and local regulations for all materialsutilized in this test method.7.Cleaning of Bottles7.1 All glassware should be thoroughly cleaned,rinsed withdistilled water,and dried.8.Preparation of Reference Color Standards8.1 Use the following basic stock solutions for preparing thereference color standards:8.1.1 Solution AAdd 75 mL of concentrated HCl todistilled water in a 3000-mL volumetric flask,dilute to themark with water and mix thoroughly.1This test method is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D16 onAromatic Hydrocarbons and Related Chemicals and is the direct responsibility ofSubcommittee D16.02 on Oxygenated
