immediately following the designation indicates the year of original adoption or,in the case of revision,the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.1.Scope 1.1 This method covers the determination of the viscosity of asphalts,tars,pitches,and similar bituminous materials by means of a sliding-plate microviscometer.It is applicable to materials having viscosities in the range 10 to lo9 Pa.s(los to 1Opoise)and is therefore suitable for use at temperatures where viscos-ity is in the indicated range.The shear rate may vary between approximately to 10 reciprocal seconds(s-I),and the method is suitable for determinations on materials hav-ing either Newtonian or non-Newtonian flow properties.1.2 Shear susceptibility may also be deter-mined.1.3 Method viscom-eter.Piocedure A makes use of an apparatus that creates a controlled load.Procedure B utilizes an apparatus that creates a controlled rate of deformation.The procedures apply to two specific instruments;other sliding-plate rheometers that produce equivalent results may be used.3.2 Procedure A-A film 50,100,300 or 500 p m thick(depending on the viscosity of the sample and the test temperature)is placed between two matched steel plates(Figs.1 and 2).One of a pair of the steel plates is clamped to the viscometer frame and the other to a device for adding the load.Five different loadings are used and the displacement rate recorded for the movable plate.Data devel-oped permit calculation of rate of shear,shear stress,viscosity,and shear susceptibility.3.3 Procedure 8-An asphalt film of de-termined thickness is formed between matched pairs of aluminum,steel,or glass plates.One plate is clamped in a fixed posi-tion,the other is displaced at constant,prese-lected velocities,and the shearing force is measured(Figs.3 and 4).Rate of shear,shear stress,and viscosity are calculated from the dimensions of the specimen,displacement rate,and the shearing force viscosity-the ratio between the a p plied shear stress and the rate of shear is called the coefficient of viscosity.This coeffi-cient is a measure of the resistance to flow of the liquid.The SI unit of viscosity is the pas-cal-second(Pa.s)with dimensions of newton-second/metre.One pascal-second is equiva-lent to IO poise(10 P).For convenience the larger unit of megapascal-second(MPa.s),equivalent tii 10 megapoise(10 MP),is fre-quently used.4.2 Newtonian liquid-a liquid having a viscosity that is independent of the shear stress or shear rate.If the ratio of shear stress to shear rate is not constant,the liquid is non-Newtonian.5.Apparatus 5.1 Viscometers,sliding plate type,and as-sociated equipment not listed below,suitable for this method,are described in Annexes AI and A2.5.1.1 Controlled Load Viscometer(See Annex AI).5.1.2 Conrrolled Deformation Viscometer(See Annex A2).5.2 Thermometer,an accurate,calibrated thermometer graduated in 0.1C(0.2F)and conforming to the requirements of Specifica-tions E 1 shall be used.Other thermometric devices are permissible providing their accu-racy,precision,and sensitivity are equal or better.ASTM Thermometers 63C or 63F,or both,are suitable for determinations in the range-8 to 32C(18 to 89F).Calibrated ASTM kinematic viscosity thermometers are also suitable.5.3 Hot Plate,with a variable transformer or other acceptable temperature-controlling device,capable of maintaining a surface tem-perature of 60 to 75C(140 to 167F).
